I plan to apply as a nursing major as it is my dream and goal in life to become a nurse and help others! I also have gotten only A’s in classes that I took at my local community college which ranked #1 in the nation!
Nursing is very competitive at all the schools. Your GPA is excellent but test scores will hurt your chances. EC’s are very good but they will not make up for your test scores.
UCLA: Reach
UCI: Low Reach
SDSU: High Match
CSUF: Match
SDSU had 3810 applications and 227 accepted so a 6% admit rate last year. UCI’s acceptance rate is 5.3%. Do you have any other backup schools? Cal States do not consider your EC’s, only GPA and test scores.
@Gumbymom Thanks for the advice! Also what would my chances be at these nursing schools?
University of San Francisco
University of Seattle
University of Portland
NYU
Georgetown
UPEN
Those schools consider EC’s
UCSB: Low Reach (Bio very popular major although UCSB does not admit by major into L&S but likes high test scores). EC’s will help you.
Cal Poly SLO: High Match/Low Reach (25% acceptance rate with over 4000 applicants for Bio) If you applied ED, you would have better chances.
Only thing holding you back is your test scores. SLO will also take into consideration your 9th grades so I am not sure how your GPA will compare with your posted UC GPA.

Reach, GPA is very good but test scores can kill you. UCs are high reach.
@biobabe101: Child development has a higher projected acceptance rate above 50% and Nutrition is around 26%. If you would be happy with the Child development major, go for it.
There is no specific link for the acceptance rate, these are projected yield numbers based on historical data.
@Gumbymom Thank you so much for all your input and advice. This is my last question…what are my chances at the following schools that I have also applied to?
UCB-Public Health Bio
UCD-Microbiology
Your test scores will hurt your chances at UCD and UCB so I think you have a slim chance at these UC’s.
You should focus on the lower tier UC’s, the Cal States, USF, Univ of Portland and Univ of Seattle.
Hi @Gumbymom, I’m new to CC, but I’ve gathered a lot of info from your various posts I’m a mother of a daughter who applied ED to Cal Poly SLO as a Child Development major. I see that you mentioned above that Child Development has a projected acceptance rate of above 50%. I’ve looked a the 2015-16 projections for each major:
@melia1: Sorry, I used some outdated numbers for the projections. Thank you for noting my mistake. ED acceptance rate will be higher than projected but definitely not 50%.
@Gumbymom Well darn I was hoping you knew something I didn’t! I liked your numbers much better.
“ED acceptance rate will be higher than projected” Can you give any more info on that statement?
There doesn’t seem to be much info out there about Liberal Arts stats, particularly for Child Development.
@biobabe101, I agree with @Gumbymom. Your test scores are really affecting your chances of admission. You spent a lot of time on your EC’s but, I guess you haven’t realized that these are supplemental to your GPA and SAT/ACT and don’t help you if your GPA and SAT are not competitive. You are going backwards. The schools, like the UC’s, look at GPA and test scores first. Your chances at the UC’s are slim, especially at UCB and Davis.
Your chances at the high-tier CSU’s are also compromised because of those test scores. Getting a 3 on your AP’s indicates that you may struggle at the UC’s.
Plus, you are trying to gain entry into nursing or health ed. If you think you can go into nursing through the back door at some of these universities, it is not going to happen. These are competitive programs. Some schools only take you in the major at the time of admission because of competition.
Since you are applying to the California publics, I guess you are unaware that they don’t use affirmative action for admission. It’s illegal at the UC’s and CSU’s to use ethnicity for admission. So your URM status only works for the privates.
Try to get your SAT up or your ACT up to have better odds. Apply to the privates that would give you points for your ECs and URM status. Otherwise, I would also suggest: Bakersfield, Stanislaus, San Bernardino, maybe Chico.
@melia1: ED acceptance rate is usually higher since SLO would like to lock in about 1/3 of their in-coming Freshman class, so an applicant that has a solid MCA score will have a better chance at ED than RD. I am using my own personal experience based on my niece’s experience last year. CSU GPA 3.4 ACT 30 and she was accepted in the ED round for Environmental Science. I think if she meets the SLO threshold (whatever they have set) as an ED applicant, she will be accepted. SLO is just really hard to predict. I would have never guessed my niece had that good of a chance in ED and figured she would be deferred to RD.
