Please chance me for these top tier Engineering Universities?

Hello everyone, I am very new to the CC, and I don't know much about what my chances would be at most universities so I'm asking for any help that can be given. Thanks in advance (:

Now to begin...

-General: I am going to be a senior in High School and am of Hispanic decent.

-PSAT: National Hispanic Scholar (209 I believe...)

-SAT: I have only taken the official SAT once so far this past May 2010, and I scored the following... Reading-670 Math-730 Writing-600 makes for a cumulative 2000. Before you go bashing me I am planning on taking it again for at least a 2150 or so.

-SAT II: I havn't taken these yet but I am going to take both Physics and Math II, and plan on getting around a 750 in each with studying...

-ACT: English-36 Math-34 Writing-32 Science-32 TOTAL:34 (I am taking this one again but it will probably stay around here. maybe a 35?)

-GPA: My GPA is a perfect 4.0 unweighted, and I have had probably a 97.5 average throughout high school while taking the most rigorous courses available. Disappointingly I am not aware of the weighted GPA...

-AP's: 3 World History (10th), 3 English Lit (11th), 3 US History (11th), 5 Physics B (11th), 5 Calculus AB (11th) and am planning on taking 6 AP's my senior year.

-EC's: Marching and Concert band all 4 years of HS, section leader 3 years, marching solo 11th gd... numerous performances and state ensemble competitions.
President of NHS 12th gd and member (obviously) (:
Debate club 11th/12th.
Masterminds 10th-12th (Game show)
People to People student ambassador 9th...
High School Aerospace Scholar 11th...
Very involved in church.
(Sorry if some of this isn't important, I am new at this remember? Bear with me and it will be much appreciated (: )

-Recommendation Letters: 2 teachers think very VERY well of me, had both of them junior AND senior year. one worked for NASA and the other was in charge of NHS.

-Hooks: Live in a rural hispanic dominated area in south SOUTH texas, (5 minutes from Mexico) I don't know if that gives me anything honestly... again bear with me (:

I want to be an engineer, with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in CPU Engineering more than likely, maybe going into Aerospace or Robotics... and I want to know if my scores and the rest of my resume might get me into these top Engineering Schools...

MIT
Stanford
UC-Berkeley
Cal Tech
Georgia Tech
University of Illinois
University of Michigan
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon
Purdue
Cooper Union
Cal Poly
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
Olin College of Engineering
Bucknell
Villanova
A&M
UT

I know there are a lot of them but if you could tell me which ones I would be safe in and which ones would be high risk I would appreciate it a LOT! Thank you everyone for helping me out and taking the time to read this even if you don't post (:

can nobody assist me?

come on everyone I really need help I have no idea which colleges would be in range for me with my stats realistically and I don’t want to apply to all of them  Anybody?

honestly, I think you have a good shot at any of those schools. Great ACT, around 2280 SAT equivalent, dont retake, this is competitive at any school. Obviously, great grades. Strong EC’s. Race will help you.

You are a strong applicant at any of these colleges, good luck.

MIT-low reach
Stanford-not sure
UC-Berkeley-low reach/high match,
Cal Tech- low reach
Georgia Tech-pretty much in
University of Illinois-good shot
University of Michigan-good shot
Cornell-good shot
Carnegie Mellon-good shot
Purdue-in
Cooper Union-in
Cal Poly-in
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology-in
Olin College of Engineering-in
Bucknell-in
Villanova-in
A&M-in
UT-in

^How is the OP “in” at Cooper Union??

Well, check out SAT/ACT ranges of colleges on your list on the CollegeBoard website. If your SAT scores are within or above the middle 50% range, it should be somewhat of a match/low reach and if it’s under the 25th percentile, it’s a high reach, etc. As for to which colleges you should apply, that’s up to you to do the research.

Thank you sooo much  You really helped me out, I honestly just didn’t know where I stood with a lot of these schools

^well his ACT’s are above the 75th percentile, GPA is as perfect it can get. He is of Hispanic descent, he has excellent Recs, demanding course schedule, strong leader ship positions and ECs

How is he not?

MASTERMINDS! I was on Masterminds! We might have competed against one another while I was in high school…! Which division!?

Okay, so MIT, Stanford, and Cornell are all super crazy reaches because they are a long shot for anyone, even with your competitive stats. You have a shot, so I’d throw in an application, but don’t get your hopes up too high; they are crazy. The same sort of goes for Berkeley, since you are clearly not a California resident, and CalTech. That being said, out of those, I think you have the best chances with Cornell and Berkeley.

Your reaches, but with a decent shot, are Carnegie Mellon, and Cooper Union but with good essays and good recs, I’d say you could get into some of them! You especially have the hook of being of Hispanic descent.

Matches are Georgia Tech, UIUC (although that’s harder to get into, you should be okay), Michigan, Olin, Bucknell (also on the high end), Villanova, and UT, and you should be in everywhere else (except for A&M and Rose-Hulman, which I do not know about).

Good luck!

^^Yes, what you said is perfectly true. But at the same time, you have to also consider that Cooper Union’s acceptance rate is about 7%, rendering it perhaps the most selective college out of all the ones on his list, and because of school’s policy of awarding full tuition scholarships to every accepted student, more applicants are applying ED to Cooper Union than ever before.

Anyway, I didn’t mean for that to sound negative or pessimistic :). The OP have a good chance at many of the colleges on his list.

And… Franklin W. Olin is NOT a cakewalk either. Good luck, you are a strong applicant.

Thank you everybody for the great advice! I’m honestly probably going to apply to all of these colleges and just see what happens. It’s good to know that there are at least a couple that I’ll be safe with (:

IMO I would say you have a decent shot at most of these schools espec if you get your SAT grades up; however any school with <100 undergraduates or <10% admit rate is a crap shoot for everyone. Did you take the most rigorous classes your school offered? A 4.0 is great, but only in the hardest classes. Better jump on the SATIIs. Times a wasting.

yes I’ve taken every possible AP class my school has to offer. Honors freshman and sophomore year and 5 AP’s junior, 6 AP’s senior… and yes I will work on my SAT and SATII’s and if I can’t get my SAT up I’ll just send in my ACT score, a 34 is pretty good I think (: Thanks again

Looks like you have a good handle on things. Now you just have to narrow down your list. Some of these schools are stronger in Aerospace or Robotics than others. If money is an issue then you should address that aspect when making your list. There are lists of things to look for on CC and many other sites.

Any other reviews for me? They would be much appreciated.

as said above, scores and urm and everything else you have going for you will definitely help. the rigor of your course load in the context of your school is very good!

MIT- reach (for anyone, but you have a good shot)
Stanford- same as mit
UC-Berkeley-slightly lower reach than mit, but it’s tough out of state
Cal Tech- low reach
Georgia Tech-match
University of Illinois-dunno
University of Michigan-match
Cornell-high match/low reach
Carnegie Mellon-high match
Purdue-match
Cooper Union-in
Cal Poly-in
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology- ?
Olin College of Engineering- tiny school so idk how hard it is to get into
Bucknell- match
Villanova- match
A&M-?
UT-in
