Can someone “chance me” for LSA (early action)
Asian Male/Upper-Middle Class, Priate School. IN STATE!
My school has a good record with U of M, around 84% of applicants were accepted in 2016.
GPA(UW/W): 3.67/N/A (our school doesn’t do weighted)
GPA was 3.85 for fresh/soph year (6 A’s 1 B) however junior year I took harder classes and it lowered my GPA to around a 3.28 so average is a 3.67 (I am hoping to get 7 A’s next year which I believe I can for the first semester of senior year)
ACT: 34 (35E,35M,34R,33S,8/12W) Superscore ACT: 35
Class Rank: Our school doesn’t have a ranking system
Course Rigor: Rigorous, junior schedule is very rigorous (probably one of the toughest schedule anyone in my grade took, however I regretted it immediately due to all the B’s I got…I was ignorant); All classes I took junior year were AP/Honors.
EC’s: Good, although not super broad.
LOR’s: Good, including one from a professor at a local university
Other:
So how does it look? I know my GPA isnt the best and has a downward trend but I am just trying to get into the Honors LSA program…does anyone know how difficult this is for an asian male?? If anyone could DM me about their personal experiences or want me to elaborate more I can…I know I screwed up badly this year but how does that affect my chances to get in??? I am really worried, thank you.
Have you looked at the Naviance data for the stat of former students admitted to UMich? The only concern is your GPA. If that is within the range of other students from your school admitted to UMich, then it should be fine. You know there were still 16% applicants from your school not accepted.
By the way, UMich does not superscore, ACT or SAT.
If 84% of people from your school who applied get in, I would say your GC would be able to give you a better analysis than any of us.
My son was at a similar Michigan private feeder school. In his grade they had 100% EA , 75% overall. You are extremely likely to be admitted but APPLY EA!!! All bets are off for RD. Kids with 3.3 and 30+ were admitted. For the few private feeders they give a GPA boost for attending the school. Most of his HS classmates are at Michigan now in LSA, Nursing, Engin, SMTD, Stamps, etc.
Don’t be discourage if you are deferred, admit is still very likely, especially if you get the 4.0 you anticipate for fall.
I’d still apply to honors and MSU as your safety. At his school they had a special EA for MSU - apply in early September and you would get a decision 1-2 weeks later - in person from the admin officer (!). Lots of kids did it. Your school may too. And apply to your other schools, of course.
Michigan (and MSU) do consider your race, by state law.
Note that Michigan will re-weight your GPA , all A=4, all B=3 etc. so getting an A- is much better than a B+
