Please Chance me for UCs....I really need help.

Hello, I live in California and attend a competitive high school. I am in Asian male in 12th grade. My major is going to be computer science. Here are some stats about me.

Extra-Curricular: I was part of my school’s Interact (volunteering club) for 1 year during 9th grade. I joined FNHS (French National Honors Society) in 10th grade and I am still an active member, this is my 3rd year. I have been the Vice-President of Physics Club for the past 2 years, this is my 2nd year. I am also part of Astronomy Club, this is my 2nd year. I recently joined Book Club, this will be my first year. I played soccer my whole life but stopped in 10th grade because I wanted to try something new. I did cross country in 11th for 1 year and was part of the Junior Varsity team for half the season and part of the Varsity team for the other half. Outside of school, during 10th grade, I helped K-5 grade school kids with their homework and earned 45 hours of volunteering. During the most recent summer, I earned 84 hours from volunteering with special education kids from the special education summer school.

Explanation of Grades:
Freshman year, I think I did pretty good, but those grades don’t really count towards colleges. Sophomore year I struggled because of my Chemistry Honors class which had a lot of work since the teacher taught the class like an AP Chem class. Junior year was terrible. I did cross country which really affected my 1st semester grades and since I did cross country 1st semester, it affected me a lot 2nd semester since I could not spend enough time studying during 1st Semester. Also I joined American Literature and Writing Honors midway through 1st semester and was never given the opportunity to catch up, the teacher didn’t allow me to complete the assignments that I had missed. Senior Year, I am actually doing really well right now. I have 6 high A’s, and no that’s not because school started recently. I have had 1 test each in my APs and a lot of small quizzes and short tests in my other classes. I think I’m doing better this year is because I don’t have an AP class like APUSH that really drained me.

I do have a story to tell but I don’t want to share it on the internet because I feel it’s too private to me.

I know Berkeley, LA, SD are all super reaches (but I’m applying because why not, I don’t know.) for me now after I failed my SAT. Should I retake my SAT?

UC Berkeley
UC Los Angeles
UC San Diego
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
UC Irvine
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Merced

Thank you so much for chancing me. (PS, these aren’t the only colleges I’m applying to. They are just the UC’s.)

If you qualify for ELC, you might get into Merced. The rest, most likely not. The average GPA for an incoming freshman at Riverside is 3.4+. You need to look at CSUs (i think SJSU has a good computer science program). I wouldn’t spend app fees for the schools above.

Based on grades posted your UC/CSU GPA is around a 3.3-3.4.

UCM/UCR: Match
UCSC: High Match/Low Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Low Reach/Reach
UCSD/UCB/UCLA: Reach/High Reach

Yes, you should retake the SAT and aim for a 2000+ for a better chances at the UC’s. Your GPA is a major obstacle for the UC’s. Average for 6 out of the 9 campuses is 4.0+ and for CS you want to be above the average. I suggest you consider looking at some Cal states for solid match and safety schools. SJSU for Software Engineering (easier admit than CS), Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento state to name a few.

Good Luck.

@sprights and @Gumbymom

I have a 3.42 uc gpa according to rogerhub.com
does that help?

Re take your SAT. Consider applying to the CSU’s; they are great schools.

For the UC’s, UCR/UCM and UCSC would be your best chances. GPA/Test scores are still low for rest of the UC’s.

@wolverinexci I wouldn’t retake SAT, it seems as though you are on a downwards trend taking it so many times. I would focus on writing the best personal statement possible for UC’s. If you apply to some non-CA schools (strongly suggest, especially some public OOS if you can afford them) make sure your essays are stellar. Good luck!

Never mind about the SAT, I just noticed you’ve taken it 3 times. Did you ever try the ACT? It doesn’t look like the SAT is your cup of tea.
Right now, Merced and Riverside are your best bets, if any.
