I'm from california if it helps any in the admission process! My gpa is pretty terrible compared to what I've been seen posted around here, but I live in an area where the high schools are pretty competitive with api scores of high 800s to 900s. My school has an API score of about 895. I also don't know if classes taken over the summer count towards my GPA but I calculated it both with and without the summer classes!

Your ECs are pretty weak in terms of leadership; “officer” doesn’t read the same as “president” or “editor in chief” in the application process.

Luckily for you, the UCs really don’t care about your EC involvement. That being said, the UCs are strictly concerned with “numbers” and as it stands, your scores aren’t up to par for the high-level UCs. I just don’t want you to be disappointed. Even if you raised your SAT – which I still recommend you shoot for that 2100 – your UW GPA (what UCs only look at) is pretty low.

UCSD - rejection
UCI - acceptance
UCD - acceptance
UCSB - rejection
UCSC - acceptance

I think you should look outside the UC system. Considering the financial problems facing the system, you might be disappointed upon attending a UC when your classes are full/not available, you receive no aid or scholarships and it takes you over 4 years to graduate.

There are plenty of private schools in California that are a good match for someone with your stats! Here are just a few:

St. Mary’s (Moraga)
Loyola Marymount
Santa Clara
Occidental
University of the Pacific
San Diego University
University of San Francisco

Thank you for replying! I just looked into University of Pacific, and it has a great dental program that I might be interested in! Do you know if my college courses count towards my GPA or is that something seperate? Also do UC’s care if your school is more competitive or do they not calculate that in their process? Thanks!

I don’t know about the GPA issue – ask your counselor.

UCs care about competitive courseload, not the school itself.

UC’s look at numbers first and extra-curriculars second. Your numbers are somewhat weak, and you should really try to make up your lower GPA with a much higher SAT score (at least 2250 to make up for your GPA). I would say add some more extra-curriculars just in case. In the end, its your GPA that may hold you back, but if you write a stellar essay and your SAT score is high, you may have a chance. As of now, you have chances of getting into UCSC, UCD, and maybe UCI. UCLA and UCB are reaches at this point.
Good luck!

Chance back?

^ OP wasn’t interested in UCLA or UCB, so they don’t have to shoot for extraordinary SAT scores. They are on par for UCSC, UCD, UCI, UCM and UCR.

Actually @Zelda Fitzgerald, UC’s look at their own calculated GPA, which is weighted and capped at 8 weighted courses.

@OP, calculate your UCGPA, it may be higher or lower than the one you have, nonetheless, more accurate to how you will be judged by UC admissions. Google UCGPA and you should find some information on that. Doorways is a good website to find which courses UC includes and which they don’t in their GPA and a-g calculations.
