PLEASE chance me for UNC Chapel Hill??

Hi all,

I'm currently a freshman at another UNC school. Here's some high school data -

Final GPA - 3.59 (unweighted); 4.44 (weighted)
Final class standing - Top 10%
AP Calculus - 4
AP Government and Politics - 4
AP English Language - 4
AP English Literature - 5
NC Governor's School 2008
Many clubs, but no official positions.
SAT Score
Math - 640
Critical Reading - 720
Writing - 680

I also earned 21 hours of college credit through another UNC school online while in high school.

Now for college...

My current GPA is a 3.31. I took 16 hours last semester and currently have 16 hours this semester as well (HOWEVER, I am considering dropping a class, which would bring me down to 13 hours). I have taken four 200-level classes ("sophomore" level) and am in a 300 level class (the one I might drop). My last semester grades were A, B+, B+, B, B-.

I'm involved in 2 clubs, have a part time job with a tutoring company, and regularly volunteer for the Red Cross (on call for 1 week every month to react to house fires, power loss, flooding, etc).

The UNC website states -
For enrolling sophomores, the average college GPA was 3.44 and the average SAT was 1220.

So, my GPA is a little weak compared to last year, but I attended a transfer orientation and they said the average transfer GPA was a 3.3. My SAT is above average (1360). I'm pretty confident in my application essays.

I was rejected from Chapel Hill as a freshman applicant (I got a D in AP Calculus, which ruined my GPA). What do you think my chances are for getting in as a transfer?? Will it significantly hurt my chances if I drop my 300-level class?

Thanks for any insight. I REALLY want to go to Chapel Hill, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Meiliem, I think that the strongest part of the your application are your ap test scores and SATs. However, your high school GPA is mediocre and your college GPA is a little low. Though with a good essay and possibly good ec’s you will get in. Also, i suggest staying in that course. I believe that you have to have taken 30 hours at the prior university to transfer? I might be wrong, but thats what I thought.

I am also in the same position for UNC, chance mine?

what do you think?

Hey -

Yeah, I realize my college GPA is pretty fail, but my GPA from UNCG (where I took the online classes) was a 3.72. I took 2 history classes, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, and a health wellness course. Do you think that’ll help me at all?

Last semester I took humanities, literature, mass communication, astrophysics, and sociology courses. This semester I’m taking biology, criminology, digital media, and a health course about alternative and complementary medicine. I think that’s pretty well-rounded, but I don’t have any math (placed out with AP score) or foreign language (my school doesn’t offer any interesting ones).

My two best friends actually go to UNC and the minimum number of hours to be considered a sophomore is 15, oddly. This is confirmed on the UNC website.

I think your application is quite strong, the only weak points being the equally mediocre high school GPA (UNC doesn’t really care about weighted GPAs) and the average SAT. But, your SAT score is the same as the average for last year’s enrolling class and your college GPA is excellent. You didn’t say if you were a North Carolina resident or not, but I believe out-of-state applicants have a greater chance being accepted as a transfer rather than a freshman. I don’t really see any reason why you would be denied. :)

meiliem - It will hurt your chances if you drop the class, but not because it’s a “300 level class.” That really doesn’t matter. The add/drop period has probably passed and it will leave you with a “W” on your transcript. I think your high school stats are pretty solid but a 3.31 is not very high, regardless of what level the classes are. You might be better off waiting a year; however, there’s no shame in applying anyways because you never know how they’ll see it.

UndecidedF10 - I think you have as good of a shot as anyone applying.

Do grade deflations exist at such schools as UNC-CH, Columbia, NYU, Carleton, Georgetown, and Emory?

Would a withdrawal really have that significant of an impact on my chances? I’m incredibly afraid of doing poorly in this course, but I won’t drop it if it’s going to completely ruin my application…
