Please Chance Me for UPenn Wharton~~

Hi!

I'm thinking about applying to UPenn Wharton ED this year (my absolute dream school), so here are my stats. Please chance me! THANK YOU

I have a weird situation where I repeated 10th grade (not because I couldn't keep up lol I was always younger than everyone in my class. Complicated~ I repeated 10th grade when I transferred schools, so I have 2 10th grade records)

Scores:
PSAT: 209 sophomore year, 213 Junior
SAT: M-770, CR-730, W-800. Total-2300
SAT II: MathIIC - 800, USH - 700 (might not use this if possible), Planning on taking Chem and/or physics, and Chinese
AP: USH - 3 (bleh..i hate history), Micro-5, Macro-5, Chinese-5. Don't know about Stats and Lang yet. Planning on taking Chem, Calc BC, and Physics next year.

GPA unweighted:
At my first and smaller school (G9, 10) - 3.9. We actually used the IB/MYP scale, but my transcript gave a GPA as well.
My new and MUCH more competitive and larger school (G10, 11) - 3.79
So when I average up all my GPA, I get 3.82, but don't know what the colleges will do with this.

Ethnicity: Asian

Hooks: none..or does founding a club at school count? >.<

I know that Wharton is probably a pretty big reach considering my GPA and kind of unfocused ECs...but what do you think? Is it still worth a try?

Honest opinions please~~ I don't mind if you're harsh, as long as it's honest hehe Thanks in advance!

I’d say the only trouble you’re going to have is being Asian (which makes admission alot harder) and not having a hook.
Not to be stereotypical, but I’m sure you know alot of Asians have 9.0 GPAs, perfect standardized test scores, and can play piano.
If can get a hook though, I’m sure you’ll have a fair chance. But you need to stand out from other Asians.

^ Thanks for replying~~ >.<

hmm yeah…why are all asians so smart and overachievers?? LOL
Would founding an English Tutoring Club be considered a hook? When I was writing my stats up, I thought that hooks meant if you’re a legacy etc haha But I just looked it up and realized what the real meaning of “hook” is haha

Yeah, you seem like the typical Asian applicant.

okay, since it looks like I’m so ordinary, I’m planning on stressing on my dedication to the English Tutoring Club. It’s a club I founded for a group of students to go to nearby local migrant schools to teach elementary schools english once or twice a week. I’m also planning on stressing how much transferring schools affected me ( I was at my first school for 10 years so I basically had no experience being a new student before) and how much I learned about myself at my new school when nobody knows me, while at my first school everyone in the school recognized and knew who I am etc.

What do you think? =)

Oh in addition to UPenn Wharton, I’m also considering applying to these schools (MAYBE not all):

Univ of Notre Dame (EA)
Univ of Chicago (EA)
Cornell University
Northwestern University
Wash. Univ in St Louis
University of Southern California
Georgetown University
UCs: Berkeley, San Diego, Davis, LA (since all the UCs are just one app haha)
Stanford <– ehhh still thinking about this one haha just want to test out my luck

Those are sort of my reach/low reach/target schools…I’m still thinking of some safeties. Any suggestions, according to my stats?

I agree you do come off as the typical Asian applicant. You play piano, are part of student govt, involved in lots of clubs, etc etc. The problem with your ECs is that nothing really jumps out at me of a passion or something for a specific activity. So to get into Wharton ED, I’d say it’s a reach…

Univ of Notre Dame (EA): match
Univ of Chicago (EA): low reach
Cornell University: low reach
Northwestern University: match
Wash. Univ in St Louis: low reach
University of Southern California: match
Georgetown University: match
UCs: Berkeley, San Diego, Davis, LA (since all the UCs are just one app haha): yeah but…the difference between those UCs are pretty huge. Berkeley- low reach, SD/Davis in, LA match
Stanford <– ehhh still thinking about this one haha just want to test out my luck: uhh…high reach. but you knew that.

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736548-chance-me-top-schools-ivies.html</a></p>

^ Thanks~~

I do spend a lot of time on tutoring english to local migrant school students and am very dedicated to that. I guess I’ll just have to bring that out in my essay… haha

I kinda disagree with the asian sterotype because you play a sport lol. I think that might be a hook. lol I think you stand a chance for UPenn. Never give up your dream! Don’t listen to anyone here saying that you cant make it because no one here is an admission officer. everyone has the grades (to an extent) and scores need to be in the range (which is why I’m not worried when people say my scores are too low). Most of admission to these schools are essays and recs. Do well on these and your chances increase significantly.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736982-another-chance-threaddd-wooo-hooo.html</a></p>

^ Thank you for the advice! I’m just kind of worried about my low-ish (compared to other ED wharton applicants) gpa =( Since I always used the MYP/IB scale (out of 7), when I switched to my new school that used gpa I didn’t really understand what was “good” and what was “bad” haha I was even satisfied with a 3.7-ish gpa in sophomore year but now I know it’s on the low side lol.

bump!

bumppp again~~

Your SAT score is great, and helps out your lower GPA. As far as your ECs, you do have a lot a variety, before and after the HS switch. That’s fine, but make sure you tell on your applications your role within each club and what you did with it as otherwise those memberships are meaningless.

Univ of Notre Dame (EA): Match
Univ of Chicago (EA): Reach
Cornell University: Reach
Northwestern University: Match
Wash. Univ in St Louis: Low Reach
University of Southern California: Match
Georgetown University: Reach
UCs: Berkeley, San Diego, Davis, LA: In/Match, Berkeley is Low Reach due to GPA
Stanford: High Reach, but you could always try your luck

As for safeties, you could take a look at schools like U of the Pacific and Lewis and Clark.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/737246-chances-wellesley-ed-lacs.html</a></p>

Thanks to everyone so far~!

Keep em coming~! haha

bump! 10char

Given your SAT score, I don’t think your GPA will hurt your chances that much.

What I see as the major weakness of your application is that your ECs don’t really demonstrate why you want to go to Wharton. Most of the ECs are generic community service/school clubs. Just to emphasize my point, lots of people I know who got into Wharton was involved in some kind of business/investment club on campus, did internships or something entrepreneurial, or had impressive leadership experience.

Your best bet at this point would be to demonstrate your interest in Wharton through your essays. Why Wharton as opposed to another top school like Harvard, Princeton, etc.?

^ Thanks! I think I left out quite a lot of things in my above stats…so I shall update it [in bold]
