Yes…NYU does meet full need but they tend not to be a generous as other colleges that do so. The biggest issue is that the NPCs are currently set for students starting in fall 2023 and that is not this student. It’s very up in the air when these will be set for the next academic year as there are significant changes being made to the FAFSA which will impact how these are. @Mwfan1921 can explain more.
@soozievt in your best experience, what is a reasonable number of auditions a student can plan to complete. I can’t really give my advice because my kid had to do all in person auditions…and with virtual and recorded options, I’m guessing this could be more than the 7 my kid did.
With your parents willing/able to pay $40k/year. You can safely remove UCLA, UMich and Penn State.
Since your interest is in MT, you will have to look at each school to see where that major is housed. It may or may not require an audition. If it doesn’t require an audition, assume that admissions will be similar to any major.
When I mentioned the Net Price Calculator and the EFC, I was referring to all her colleges, not just NYU, because she says she ran it and it comes close to their desired cost. I realize that things could change in the next admissions cycle, but the new FAFSA won’t be released until December and so for now, this is an estimate to go by. I also mentioned NYU due to your mentioning this particular school and just was clarifying their financial aid policy.
In terms of how many auditions…she mentions Vocal Performance, and at the same time also mentions a desire to do MT. She lists 18 schools. If she auditions for MT, there are Unified Auditions that many, but not all, of these schools attend, where many auditions can be done over a few days. As well, as you know, today there are also virtual auditions permitted for many programs. 18 auditions appears to be common these days. I wouldn’t do more than that. She likely would be fine doing a little less. I’d be sure to have two non-audition BA schools that are also academic l likely schools on the list (as well as affordable). There is no way to assess her chances to these audition-based programs as we are not privy to her skill set or samples.
@nysings You need to understand that at many, but NOT all, BFA in MT or BM in VP degree programs, you won’t be able to double major. You MIGHT be able to major in MT or VP, and minor in something else. If you are truly intent on a double major, then a BA degree program is where you can best do that.
There are some Dual Degree programs for BM in VP. But not for MT.
In considering your interests, these are some other schools that you may want to consider. Many of them are also in close proximity to performance spaces (NYC, Chicago, Cleveland). I’m not sure which are BM vs. BA programs, but they all seem to have popular music/musical theater and English/creative writing/journalism programs. Many of them also fall within budget, by sticker price alone. Others you would be likely to receive sufficient merit to bring the price within range. Only a few (American, in particular) would need-based aid be of particular importance.
