IB DIPLOMA CANDIDATE!

ECs, Volunteer, Work...
1. Crew Captain 11 and 12. Incredibly serious about it. I have been the Head Coxswain since freshman year, Varsity 4 years. HoCR, States, etc...never nationals due to having a new coach every season. This summer I have been moved up to Senior team, hoping to do well at Henley. (HUGE LEADERSHIP).
2. Musicals at school: cameo/supporting 9th and 10th, lead 11th (likely 12th).
3. Rowing Coach for novice and modified rowers.
4. Volunteer to help cox Masters team
5. Musical Scenes (every other year) 10th and 12th leads
6. Chorale - select choir, auditions, solos.
7. Docent for school tours, service to school, etc
8. Tutor Mandarin Chinese

Additional:
I speak Spanish and Mandarin Chinese - as an average white girl, I suppose this is unusual. (Both of my parents speak only English). Hebrew is passable, but worse. I am incredibly passionate about languages and I think I may write my college essays on that. I love to write.
I'm the only person at my school who has ever taken Music Theory, Art, Physics, and Chinese! Pretty cool :)
Female
Income: high? Couldn't pay full tuition, though.
Hooks: I don't know. White girl. Quirky. Rowing.
School type: Top public in very poor city.

Chance me for Ivies, Barnard, Duke, Northwestern, etc...? Even lower schools, any recommendations? Which ECs looks the best?

Yale is my dream school (not realistic, I think). Side note: Yale v. Brown? Should I apply to Yale SCEA? Advice? Thoughts? I know everyone seems to be super amazing on this site, so any advice would be great :)

Thank you so much!

Your test scores seem to be on the low side. That being said, if I were you, I would go for Brown ED.

Take some SAT II’s and get great scores, and get your SAT I score above 2300 and you should get into any school you apply to. The fact that you more than excelled at something outside of academics (rowing) stands out the most, and all your volunteer work is the icing on the cake.

Your extra curricular activities are awesome, however your SAT score is low for the ivies, but your ability to speak diverse languages should certainly help especially if you excel on SAT II’s for the languages.

Rowing, the languages, and your school type/location are what stands out to me. Bring your SAT scores up to where you want them to be (2250) and you should get into Brown ED and maybe other Ivies. If your SAT scores don’t come up I think your best bet is Brown ED.

If you want the Ivies, you could either go ED at Brown or Cornell or… re-take the SAT. If you did get it up above 2200, that score would not only help your ED chances at Brown or Cornell… it would help you in RD at others.

You might also consider some top LACs in the Northeast, assuming you want to be in New England or the Mid-Atlantic.:

Williams
Amherst
Swarthmore
Middlebury
Wellesley
Bowdoin
Haverford
Vassar
Hamilton
Bryn Mawr
Bates
Colby
Barnard

If you got into Swat, Haverford or Bryn Mawr, you could take some classes at Penn.

If you got into Wellesley, you could take some classes at MIT.

If you got into Barnard, you could take some classes at Columbia.

Your application at this point is brought down a lot by your test scores. I’d say that if you’re able to get a 2250 with relatively equal distribution on the SAT or a 33 on the ACT, your application would be quite strong. As a side note, stop saying you’re an average white girl! If you adopt this mentality, colleges will be able to see it in your essay. Why would they want to accept an average person when they can have an extraordinary person? Anyways, you’re way above average, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise (at the same time, don’t go to the other extreme!). With your scores at this point, I’d say 7 of the 8 Ivies would be mid to high reaches; the exception is Cornell, which I’d say is a low reach/reach. With your current test scores, I doubt you’d be accepted to YALE EA, Brown ED I’d be skeptical of as well, but a bit less surprised. If you can bring your test scores up, you’ll have a much better shot, and I could easily see you getting into Brown with the test scores in a more ideal range. Best of luck, and chance me back please!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1662544-chances-at-harvard-yale-princeton-mit-brown-columbia-dartmouth-tufts-duke-amherst.html#latest</a></p>

I agree that your test scores are a bit weak. However your leadership and ECs are great! Fortunately you can easily improve test scores and that will improve your application a lot! If you are good enough to be recruited for rowing that could be hugely advantageous as well. I think you have a great shot at being accepted to at least a few of your top choices. Good luck!

Thank you for chancing me.
You have excellent leadership positions and ECs as said above by a few other posters.
Yes, your test scores are on the low side.
I would recommend picking either the SAT or ACT to test again to really PUSH and improve that score. The two tests for the fall are a month apart and you probably wont have time to study for both the ACT and SAT on top of at least 2 Subject Tests.

You should really do fine on a Chinese SAT II. In addition, that test alone will stand out among other applicants because the norm SAT IIs to take are the sciences or math. I would recommend two subject tests and some Ivy’s require two, i.e Princeton.

This summer, what ever is left of it, really GRIND and study up the SAT or ACT. Raise it to a 2300 or at least a high 2220 and I want to say you’re set for some of your top schools. Study up those subject tests too!!

What do you want to major in? This might help me give you some match schools for you to consider.

Pick your top school and go SECA/ED. Yale will be a reach regardless of who you are - perfect SAT or not, loads of ECs or not. In reality, your ECs and test scores get your foot in the door. Your ESSAY gets your foot on the campus.

Thanks for chancing me :D

SAT 1/SAT 2 - I agree with the others that your SAT I score is a bit on the low side. Which subject tests do you plan on taking btw? And what’s your intended major? I guess you can retake SAT I, but I would recommend doing the subject tests first.

ECs - I don’t really don’t know how to comment on these because a lot of the clubs you listed don’t/barely exist where I study. Your linguistic skills definitely show in the ECs and writing about it in your essay could provide admission officers insight on this passion.

Ivies/Other Colleges - If Yale is your dream school, you should apply ED there even though it’s a high reach (it’s a reach for anyone really) That being said, you should consider LACs like what the other poster said. Also, sorry for my presumption, but it seems like you’re aiming top colleges, just because of their prestige. I think you should research on the courses offered and try to narrow it down slightly.

General - I feel you’re very animated and yes, kinda quirky. There’s a lot of enthusiasm in the way you write and I think that would help your essay. And no, YOU ARE NOT AN AVERAGE WHITE GIRL.

Good luck :)

Thanks for helping me out-

I’d kill someone unimportant for your GPA, but your test scores might hurt you. I’d say get up to a 34 ACT or some equivalent SAT score, and you’re golden- well, as golden as you can be with regard to the ivies.

I don’t know much about Barnard, but I think Duke would be attainable with your current record. You can do Northwestern for sure.

You’ve got a list full of <20% schools, so I feel like I need to say low to high reach for all of them…but honestly you’ve got a pretty good shot on GPA alone, and anyone with consistent 3.9s has the work ethic to bring test scores up. Stop calling yourself average, and read Infinite Jest before writing your essays, and I’m sure you’ll do fine.

Good luck! :)

Hahahah I have read Infinite Jest! I plan on taking US History, Chinese with Listening, and Literature @kimberlim @literaturemajor :)

@literaturemajor‌ Duke may theoretically be ‘attainable’ but I wouldn’t be too optimistic. Particularly with those SAT scores.

Getting into an Ivy basically involves quite a bit of luck and a lot of great stats. Ivies are a reach for anyone no matter how smart they may be.

If you can improve your SAT score a bit more to maybe a 2250+, then I’ll say that you have a pretty solid chance esp. if you apply ED to either brown or cornell

And gurl! You got this! Make sure to write a killer essay, and make us all proud!

(It would be awesome if you can possible chance me over at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1669849-can-anyone-chance-me-for-wellesley-will-try-to-chance-back-everyone-who-replies.html?new=1</a> )

Your ECs, especially your crew career, are very good. I’d suggest sending in a performance video to your top choice schools, I think Yale has a good women’s crew team. You should definitely try to improve your SAT score, 2200+ should be sufficient.

Ivies are a reach for everyone, but Cornell might be a low reach if you apply ED.
Northwestern, Barnard = low reach.
Duke = high match.

Good luck!

You’re on the right track. Stellar gpa, ECs, and probably essay according to what you said about you’re writing. Drop the “typical white girl” label, its only detrimental. Instead, adopt more of a unique white girl mentality haha. Your standardized test scores need a bit of work, nothing too bad. You have a good chance, show interest, leadership, and unique-ness in your application, and write a stellar essay!

If you want a chance, break 2300 on SAT, at least 760+ in each section.

The most appealing thing on your application to me is that you are proficient in Chinese. Play that up, and talk about how it influenced your career choices in your essays.

You have an abundant amount of unique extracurriculars. I love the fact that you could speak Chinese, Spanish, and Hebrew! But yeah, try to increase your SAT score to 2250 and you’ll be set! Try taking sat 2’s as well, maybe foreign languages? Brown would be the best pick for you IMO.
Good luck
