Please chance me guys (OOS)

So I am currently a HS Junior and have the dream of getting into UNC-Chapel Hill. I have visited 3 times already and am going back again to visit this summer. I really believe I belong here. I know how ridiculous it is for out-of-staters to gain admission here, but I am in West Virginia, which is an under-represented state, so maybe that helps just a tad?

Sex: M
Ethnicity: White
State: WV
School: Public (Not that competitive)

Top 10% of class

UW GPA: 3.7
W GPA: 3.9
(Keep in mind my school doesn't offer a plethora of AP's. You cannot take any freshman year, may take 1 soph. year (AP Euro History), which I took, and a few more Jr. and Sr. years that I am taking and will load up on AP's next year. So Im pretty much taking the most rigorous classes I can. Also, my school doesn't weight honors courses if that matters because I know of some that do.) Upward trend as well.

AP's taken once I'm out of HS:
AP Euro
AP Language
AP US Government
AP Literature
AP US History
AP Physics
AP Chemistry

SAT I:
CR-760
M-710
W-740
1470 / 2210

SAT II:
Math-770
US History-750
Literature-690
World History-650

EC's:
2 years of lacrosse(we didn't have a lacrosse team when I was an under-classman and we aren't even funded by the board so we hold fundraisers and raise money a lot. Thinking of writing an essay on how the team pulled together so we could be able to have a team.)
1st team all-state Lacrosse
2 years of JV basketball
2 years of Varsity Tennis
President of DECA
VP of FCA
Founder of the school Dance Club
Involved with student Government
Young Democrats Club

Volunteering:
I'd say about 100+ Hours as of now.
Relay For Life
Very involved in my church (Have gone to Haiti and Jamaica and have had wonderful experiences there. Thinking of maybe writing an essay on this as well.)
Campaign work for senator

Awards:
National Honor Society
Rotary Youth Leadership Award
All-State in Lacrosse (Midfielder)

Recs:
Counselor:decent? I don't even know her
Teacher: Pretty solid
Lax Coach: Good

Hook: 5 year subscriber to Tar Heel Monthly, # of visits I've taken to Chapel Hill.

So what do you think my chances are OOS? What could I do that would really boost my chances? I know getting high scores on AP exams will be big. Would applying EA action boost my chances at all or re-assuring them that if admitted, I'm 100% binded to them? Maybe requesting an interview? Not sure how often at all UNC allows interviews? I'm thinking of writing them an extra-long essay on why I belong at UNC and that I want to be a part of the Carolina Family!

Thanks so much for reading

Work hard on your essay and get some one you respect to review it. Be sure to get good (great) recommendations. The recs don't have to be from your teachers of your best classes, actually if its from a teacher of one of your weaker classes and the recommendation is very good, then that will help.

I think you've got a great shot...I got in OOS ea this year--from CT which is probably more highly represented than WV--with slightly better SATs, similar GPA/Rank, and worse extra-curriculars. So I wouldn't panic at all--just keep doing what you're doing: keep grades up, keep pursuing community service and ec's that you care about, and have a good lax season

also UNC's app has two essays (one long (approx 500 words) and one short (approx 250 words) ) so you should be able to use both of your essay topics in some form

Thanks a lot Eli and dancer. I will probably re-take the SAT I to see if I could boost it up a little higher. Any other chances?

I think you have a great shot at getting in! Just keep up your grades and activities and dont worry too much! I think your sats are very solid so dont stress. Good luck!

Yeah, I'm sure you'll get in. But, why would anyone visit like 4 times? What could you possibly have missed the first 3?

Well, I love the atmosphere in Chapel Hill. Plus, I go down to the beach every summmer so I always make time to visit Carolina for a day or two.

Great shot man! Write some good essays!

Thank You very much. I'm just a little bit worried about my GPA. Even if it were a 3.6, you still think I'd be fine? I keep seeing all these out-of-staters w/ a 4.0 UW and like a 4.60 W.

That's the nice thing about UNC. Their admissions is really holistic. There is no minimum gpa or standardized test score before they even begin to look at you.

I think you have a really good shot. Just keep up the hard work.

I just can't stop worrying that my GPA isn't high enough to be admitted out-of-state. Maybe my SAT's and SAT subject tests will show them i can handle their curriculum?

Sorry to bump, but I was wondering if anyone else could chance me?

I wonder if Carolina conducts interview if you request one? I think I could sell myself since Im too worried about my GPA.

pretty good chance, try to keep ya grades up!

Thanks and sorry to keep bumping, BUT one thing they may not like is that Im only in Algebra II as a Junior, BUT I am going to double up and take Trig and Pre-Cal next year. Will this hurt me you think? What if I score higher on my Math SAT?

bump / 10 char

TarHeelBound-

I think it will not hurt you if you have not skipped a year in math. I know a guy that got in and he didn't take AP English or more advanced maths earlier.

I also know a girl who graduated last year, who had not skipped a year in math, and she got into Wake Forest.

I believe the important thing is your grades, so I'm sure you will be fine.

you're right, that is a problem. you're only in algebra II?? dude, you're going to have so much trouble in ap physics, which requires calculus. AB calc isnt' even sufficient, you need BC. it definitely will hurt you but you have strengths in other areas

i got in EA and i didn't show any demonstrated interest in UNC before i applied. With all of your interest, i really dont' think you should worry but make sure the admissions office knows how much you love them

Okay guys. Don't sugarcoat anything. I am going to do my best take a math in the summer and then take AP Calc AB. My school doesn't have BC so there is nothing I can do about that.Do you think they would put a lot of importance on what you're taking senior year? Because I am taking 5 AP's next year? I know my GPA is awful for UNC OOS and will probably cost me admittance in the end, but whatever. thank ya

Guazn-

AP Physics does not necessarily require AP Calculus. And, if you will notice, the OP said he would double up on maths so he could take more.

TarHeelBound-

Are you in Alg. II this semester? If so, take pre-calc. your first semester next year and AP Calculus AB the second semester, along with AP Physics if you so desire.
