I want to apply for UC Irvine as a transfer student from El Camino Community College. My major is psychology. My GPA is 4.0.
By the End of this fall, I will have completed 38 units, including all pre-requisites (My math is in progress now). However, I won't have completed the 7 course pattern yet (will be one class away). And I will still have 22 units left to get my IGETC. I am absolutely positive I can get them by the end of Spring 2011. I am planning to pursue 6 of the 22 units i will have left during winter, and the remainder 16 next spring.
What are the chances they will take me?
From what I understood, they will have me update my grades the beginning of January, but I won't have finished those 22 units then. Plus, I know they would rather have students who have already completed or who would be completing the 60 units by fall. Do I stand a chance?
Please help, I am so anxious I can't think about anything else other than this.
Thanks!

4.0? yeh you’re in -.-

Even though I am not going to have the 60 units at the time of application??

The application has you list courses that are planned or in progress. So as long as you actually complete the courses you list, you should be fine.

You should be fine. They give you up until the end of Spring to fulfill those 60 units, so they expect your courses in progress or planned courses to reflect that fulfillment. You’ll be fine so stop being anxious! :)

yeah but he has 22 units to be finished in spring

hey guys is there a section that lets us list planned classes as in winter and spring quarters? because i’m looking at the application right now (specifically the academic history section) and i can’t seem to find it… am i just blind… or do we list the IP and PL courses during the winter update?

I go to El Camino college too! I think you have a great chance as long as you keep your gpa up and as long as you complete your required courses (60+ semester units) by the end of spring. Be sure to get the classes you need and be sure that they are UC transferable, you will probably have to take two winter classes and four spring classes depending on the units. It’s also risky cause the classes here fill up quick when you don’t have first priority to choose the classes. Good luck!

I appreciate all your answers. My plan is to take 2 classes in winter (6 units) + 5 classes in spring (17 units). I can normally register early, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I am just nervous because I have no community service and a lot of units left which I think might give me low priority…

IF you have 30 units done(include AP/IB tests passed in this) as of the beginning of this term, then you’re in basically everywhere provided you write a decent essay.

if you don’t have 30 completed, you’re SOL as it’s a requirement and they’re strict about it. That said, you might be able to apply as a winter transfer(no guarantees) which if such is the case, that’s not so bad.

if you are SOL, keep the GPA up and apply next year. FYI, a 4.0 might get you into UCLA and UCB if that’s your intent.

Now you really got me nervous.
By the end of Spring 2010 I had 22 transferable credits completed.
By the end of Fall 2010 I will have 38 transferable credits.
By the end of Winter 2011 I will have 42.
By the end of Spring 2011 I will have 61.
I have other credits but they are not transferable, and they are not very many either.
I looked online for this requirement of at least 30 units completed by the beginning of fall previous to applying but I couldn’t find anything.
I don’t really want UCLA ou UCB.
I don’t really know what AP/IB is, but I have course work from an international university that I could us if that would help, however I would probably need to translate it.
Please let me know, as I am now way past nervous.

You are talking about a TAG right? What if I apply without a TAG? I don’t really have chances of getting in?

honestly, you’re in.

Nervous breakdown with a 4.0…?

please stop…

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to sound obnoxious. What I am worried about is not about the 4.0 which I know it is great. What I am worried about (and even more now after that post) is that they will not take me due to the low number of units completed as of right now. I mean I know I am capable of completing them prior to enrollment, but I am just scared they won’t take my word for it, and that they would like to see more units finished before applying. Has anyone ever heard about this rule that you have to have accumulated 30 units by the end of the spring before applying? Or is that just fr TAG?

Okay, since you’re still worried after all this. Honestly a 4.0 does not guarantee you in, so don’t even consider that right now, plus that’s only after 22 units that you have that 4.0. What you need to do is see a counselor and make sure that you will have enough units if you stay on course with courses in progress and planned courses for the next 2 quarters. That will give you the biggest peace of mind. As for being worried about what they will think about your low number of units, you can’t change that. Your either still going to apply or not, so you might as well just try. It wont hurt you. Good luck and relax!

"I am just nervous because I have no community service and a lot of units left which I think might give me low priority… "

You’re thinking of this stuff awfully late… did you just decide that you wanted to transfer all of a sudden? If you have all of those units to make up for, you might as well just focus on your studies and try to maintain the best GPA possible.

are these quarter units or semester units?

if they’re quarter units, you need 90 to transfer FYI.

and do you have credit from taking AP courses? I had nearly 30 semester units from past CC courses/AP before I even started full time at a CC after I graduated from HS.

I might be wrong on needing 30 units to be eligible when applying, that might just be for tag.

Answering your question it was kind of sudden. I am addressing that on my personal statement, but I completed 3 years of my major in an International university and was trying to get that validated here but with no success. So that is why I had to choose to either focus on my studies or doing volunteer work (I work 50+ hours per week) on top of going to school).
I looked online and el Camino is on the semester unit system, so that is good. Thank you for all your help.

Also I didn’t even know what ap courses were, so I don’t think I have those, especially since I did not attend high school in the U.S.
