I'm applying Early Action from out of state to the nursing school
No one from my high school goes here (i dont think people at my hs even apply!)
So here are my stats:
GPA: 3.6
ACT: 23 (26 on english and math subscores)
Honors classes: bio, chem, physics, environmental science, hebrew 4-6
AP/college credit: taking stats and env. science this spring, and psychology and anthropology taken at local community college
4 yrs of english, social studies, science, and hebrew
4.5 yrs of performing arts
5 yrs of math
ECs: megavolunteer (400+hrs), tennis 4 yrs (1 yr varsity), student council 4yrs (3 yrs rep, 1 yr class secretary), leadership conference, amnesty international exec board, multicultural club, technology club, orchestra (since 4th grade), piano since 5 yrs old
Also: I have a really good essay, and 2 awesome rec letters!
And I'm first generation american (mom and dad born in russia but both went to college)
I know my ACTs are awful, but I'm hoping the other things can make up for it :O
And remember if you chance me, I will chance back!

Your GPA is fine and so are your extracurriculars, but the ACT is a killer. If you were applying to Harpur, I would say you have a tough road ahead. Decker is even harder to get into than Harpur because its more specialized. Since your OOS, you may have a bit of a boost since Bing wants your tuition money.

You also aren’t showing (in this post anyway) an interest in nursing. Because Decker is one of the professional schools, they also want to see some sort of interest that may off-set the score slightly. It’s going to be tough but good luck.

You should probably retake ACT/SATs (are you taking them in november) and try to rush those scores… the 23 is really low

Sorry bur you need better stats, I would apply regular decision and get better stats under the belt
good luck

What do you think are my chances for the school of marketing?

GPA: 3.4 weighted - 3.7 Junior year
ACT: 29 33 in english 30 in science
Teacher Recs: Solid
Essay: Solid
EC’s: Very solid
AP’s/Honors: AP English Junior and Senior year, AP Macro Senior year, Honors Math Sophomore year
Ethnicity: White
Parents: Both attended college

What do you guys think? If not for the SOM then what about the Liberal Arts School?

thanks guys. Yeah I know my ACTs are awful, but I think it’s too late to take it again, since I already applied early action!
but this is for sure my top choice! I put Harpur as my backup if I don’t get into Decker. And I am really interested in nursing, I noticed that in the freshmen classes for Decker they have statistics upon other classes- which I’m taking now (and will hopefully do well on the AP test)!
Is Decker very competetive? Whats the Decker freshamn class profile like?
And is it an advantage or disadvantage to be out of state? I’ve heard both sides of the argument…
Thanks again so much!

CollegeBr0,
It might be a reach for the SOM (Ive heard thats the most competitive and you need close to a 4.0 and 30+ ACTs), I think a 3.4 might be a little too low for SOM, but it all depends on how competetive the hs is.
But with your other stats, I think you’d definitely get in for Harpur! Good luck!

Thanks! Is Harpur where undecided students attend? Without SOM, I don’t really have another option so I’d have to look into the school where the undecided option is given.

Harpur is the liberal arts school, so there are “undecided” students there. The School of Management (NOT Marketing, don’t make that mistake on an application) is very competitive, you will need higher stats. Harpur you probably have a shot at but why would you want to do Harpur if you want business. Apply to business schools if that’s what you want, don’t waste an application to a school where you won’t have a major you want.

Penguin- I don’t know much about the nursing students (a lot of their classes are separate and the school is small) but even if you pass stats, you may need to take it anyway at Bing (the curriculum may not let you skip it regadless of AP credit) so be prepared for that if you get in. But hey, since you’re taking it now the material will be more familiar and easier for you.

yeah i really like stats and i wouldn’t mind taking it again in college. Also, if i dont get into nursing but do get into harpur, i see they have a psychobiology major. This is like neuroscience. does anyone know the job market for neuroscientists. salary, job availability…? I think this would be an interesting career since im interested in the brain, health sciences and psychology! it seems like a perfect match!

and collegebr0, caemin is right. if you REALLY want to go into business, but dont get into the SOM as a freshman you should look to other universities bc ive heard its nearly impossible transfer in later.
