no ACT

i rank in the 18th percentile of my class

i’m white, first-generation, attend a urban public school and i’m an avid scholar and got nominated for the LEAD program at uconn (my state school), i am a very strong essay writer and hoping it helps me

my ec’s include drama (won an award for acting), writing, gsa, and animal club, i want to start model un at my school next year because we have no clubs during rona

my prospective major is international relations or russian/eastern european studies, economics minor
library volunteer, volunteer for senate campaigns doing phonebanking and canvassing

thx

Your ECs are related to your major which is very important so I commend you for that! You’ll most likely get into Penn State, Illinois, and Mount Holyoke. As far as the other schools, most of them have a higher average GPA which would have required you to take more APs. They also like to see people who have had more challenging course-loads but you are definitely not out of the running. To be competitive at Northeastern and Berkeley you’re going to need to bring that SAT into the 1450-1500 range. What I’ve noticed about Berkeley is they put a-lot of emphasis on the essays. They like to see people who are giving and very into community service and helping others. This is a good start to a list for college, Berkeley, Northeastern, and Barnard are definitely some of your reach schools though.

thank you so much! i really appreciate the advice  :

I will only comment on UC Berkeley.

  1. As an OOS applicant, is your family prepared to pay full fees at around $65k/year with little to no financial aid.

  2. UC’s were test blind this year and may continue with this trend for the next admission cycle so GPA will be a major factor.

  3. UC’s use only 10-11th grades for the UC a-g course requirements. Make sure you are familiar with these requirements. OOS Honors classes are not weighted by the UC’s only AP/IB courses taken 10-11th grade. At end of Junior year, calculate your 3 UC GPA’s using this calculator:
