wow cmon u guys >:(

Just curious: why do you like emory so much?

chinkchink, your GPA, SAT’s, and course workload puts you in a disadvantageous position when applying to emory university.

Your unweighted GPA puts you in the bottom 25% percentile and your SAT’s put you in the 50% percentile. Please note that MOST COLLEGES do not consider the writing portion of the SAT’s (ironically, WR section is the best indicator of how one will do in college out of the entire test)

You should focus on improving the SAT’s. You already shown aptitude in the test - just improve your critical reading score by practicing that section and memorizing more vocabulary. If you prefer to take the ACT test, try taking a mock test and see if you perform within the Emory 50% range. (Most colleges will consider the highest score of the section (not sure if emory does this, check with admissions office), but scoring high in all sections in one time instead of multiple times will look better)

Try to get a 4.0 on your first grading period. Most colleges acknowledge the fact that senior year grades are best indicators of your performance in college. A upward grade trend will also work towards your favor.

Your EC’s are good, but not great. Most people applying to Emory have similar EC’s and some may even have national awards such as NMSQT/PSAT, AP Scholar Awards, Telluride, etc.

Having said this, Only 7% of Emory’s class are from the west coast. Your decision to go ED may work in your favor.

However, before ED’ing, try to visit the campus first. It is a very beautiful campus (not so much if you are into more standard brown/red buildings) with marble structures and almost greek style to it.

Average GPA: 3.71–3.98 / 4.0 unweighted scale
SAT verbal: 640–730
SAT math: 660–750
SAT writing: 650–740
SAT total: 1950–2220
ACT: 29–33

Having said this, your GPA can improve as well. If possible

Good luck in your admissions process~

"Please note that MOST COLLEGES do not consider the writing portion of the SAT’s "

That has not been my impression, although perhaps I have not looked at most schools.

Here is Emory’s “how do I stack up” on college board, including the three part SAT stats

Emory’s 08-09 common data set, page 9, says they use writing for admission

does it help to know that my high school is extremely difficult? and im only in the top 15% bc alot of the kids in my school take normal classes as oppose to AP classes and get 4.0’s which is so bs.

A 3.4 is a 3.4, no getting around it.

does it help to know that my high school is extremely difficult? and im only in the top 15% bc alot of the kids in my school take normal classes as oppose to AP classes and get 4.0’s which is so bs.

Not really. If anything, most schools look at your class rank and SAT’s to give a better idea of how “difficult” the school is.

The “alot” of students you speak of probably doesn’t stand a chance in the admission process for top 25 schools anyway. Most schools EXPECT you to take advantage of your school’s offering.

Just study hard and try to get a 4.0 in your senior year as I have mentioned and your chances will be better (how much better I cannot say)

If graduating Emory is your goal, try to apply to oxford and emory. They do not charge you additional fee and all you have to do is write one more essay.

On another note, one cannot “automatically” go to Emory Nursing school. You must apply after your sophomore year to be admitted. (applying for the school within the school after getting admitted was a huge turn off for me, tbh)

wait… are you saying I have to do well in my “prequisite” to get into the nursing school?

When you are applying to Emory University undergrad as a high school student, you are either applying to 1) Emory College of Arts & Sciences and/or 2) Oxford College.

To get into the nursing school however, you must apply to the emory nursing school after your sophomore year (around the time you declare your major).

Yes, you must fill some prerequisite to apply to the nursing school.

The prerequisites are on the bottom page of this website.

[Emory | School of Nursing](http://www.nursing.emory.edu/admission/undergraduate/bsn.html)

Admission is NOT guaranteed nor promised after filling your prereqs.

wait… so that means after i have to do WELL in my prequisite to get into the nursing school? wow

Admission into Emory’s nursing school isn’t that competitive so you don’t necessarily have to do “well” to get in. It’s a similar scenario as with transferring into the business school here: most people with a decent GPA (i.e. 3.4+) and have completed all their prereqs will get in despite the lack of any guarantees.

As for getting into Emory CAS, that as people have already said might be much harder for you. The key component that I like to tell everyone applying to Emory is to show interest. Emory adcoms knows that many of its applicants have the stats and ECs to get in and excel but have no intention of going, and WILL reject/waitlist those people in favor of someone else who is more interested but may have inferior credentials. So for you, that means applying ED, visiting if possible, having contact w/ the university in some way, and writing a very inspiring “Why Emory” essay. While applying ED already shows a lot about your interest, this component could be the deciding factor for a borderline applicant such as yourself so don’t blow it off.

Yes your GPA and SAT CR are on the low side so try to improve them as well, and if you believe your class rank and gpa are because of the difficulty of your hs, make sure to have your counselor mention that in his/her recommendation and show it with a superior SAT reasoning and subject score (the ones you have right now are kinda iffy, usually 700+ looks pretty good).

Overall I’d say a slight reach if you apply ED. Good luck!

I agree with collegestu816 that demonstrated interest is very important to Emory adcoms. They actually make this fact pretty well known. Visit if at all possible, contact admissions officers, order the video tour, etc. Just make sure they know you’re interested because they definitely consider it, and it can make or break borderline applicants.
