please chance me :o

I'm a junior right now at a very competitive high school in the bay area, california.
My sophomore year grades were not good at all because of personal family issues, but there is an upward trend in my gpa.
oh yeah, i'm asian. i was raised here but was born in taiwan.
if it helps, i want to be a nurse or a physician's assistant when i grow up, so i'll probably be majoring in something biology related.

SAT: 2190 CR: 760 W: 700 M: 730 (I might retake it?)
ACT: Taking this spring
SAT II: Chinese: 760, Taking Bio, US History, and Math level 2 before the school year ends. Aiming for at least a 780, 760, and 780 respectively.
GPA: 3.4 UW, 3.64 W
AP: Chinese (5), APUSH, APBiology,
*currently enrolled, taking exam this may
Anticipated senior schedule
-AP US gov
-AP Econ
-AP Calc BC
-Contemporary Lit
-Photography

this summer, i'm planning on volunteering at Stanford Hospital and tutoring kids in math.
I also have around 200 community service hours.
I'm also involved in DECA, a business club.

Last summer, I took Psychology at a local community college and received a B, which would be an A weighted, correct? would that factor into my GPA?
but this spring quarter, I'm planning on taking physics, and over the upcoming summer, I'm planning on taking Statistics, Chemistry, and Business, which would all be weighted because i'm taking it @ a cc right?

if it helps, i also got a 231 on my psat, and i researched a little, and i think i have a prettty good chance at being a national merit semifinalist! i'm not 100% sure if my gpa will hold me back from being a finalist though. Is it wrong that I'm hoping that this will somewhat cushion my gpa??

so i know my gpa isn't great at alll, but is there anything i can do to increase my chances of admission?!

UCI - Match/Low Match

Raise your GPA as much as possible (while maintaining or increasing course rigor!) and work on those ECs and UCI shouldn’t be a problem for you, especially with those test scores. Plus considering you got a 231 on the PSAT, you could likely raise your scores to 2200+ and I wouldn’t be surprised (if you did everything mentioned) if you were accepted to CHP and might even get some merit scholarship. Don’t forget to include your “personal family issues” which will also help offset your GPA. Upward trend is also good. Who knows, you might have a chance at better UCs too.

You’re right on track for UCI. Sorry to hear about the family issues. As mentioned by the poster above, GPA is key; the UC’s are heavily biased towards high GPA as compared to high test scores. That said, your test scores are pretty amazing so you have a very good chance at UCI. Nursing and PA are both great career options (I’m thinking of doing PA too!), but you don’t have to be a Biology major to go into either of those fields. In fact, you can apply directly for UCI’s nursing program right out of high school. Just keep in mind that if you major in Biology, you’ll be forced to take some pretty difficult classes that aren’t necessary (Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry come to mind). If Biology is your thing, go for it, but I would also look into the Public Health Major at UCI. I wish I knew about it when picking my major as a HS senior! Good luck.

thanks latitude & oceanpartier!

is uci’s nursing program difficult to get into?

the pubhealth major seems like a great idea, thank you so muchhh!

Yeah nursing is very selective. They accept about 90 out of almost 1000 applicants. Just make sure you have a good essay for both your personal statement and your nursing supplement. (Yes there is a nursing supplement for UCI)
