Please chance me Rice go-ers :)

Hello, I just completed my junior year and sorely want to be accepted into Rice!
I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA, 4.6 weighted
31 on my ACT composite (32 on math, reading, english)
Top 5% out of a class of 650
Participate in National Honor Society, 1st chair clarinet in Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Math Team, secretary of Key Club, Scholastic Bowl, and Pit orchestra for the musicals
I will have 100 hours of community service
Good, personal recommendations
I have taken AP calculus BC, AP US History, AP Language And Composition, AP government, and AP economics (all other classes are honors classes)
I am a hispanic female
(Senior year: AP statistics, AP environmental science, and going to community college for Calculus 3 and linear algebra)

Do I have a chance? (P.s I am doing early decision)

Are you in Texas or another state? The further away you are from Texas, the better your advantage.

Your ACT puts you around the 25th percentile of accepted students. If there is time for another round with the ACT and you think you have some untapped potential on the test, then re-take the test.

In the fall of your senior year Rice will host SOAR, which is a recruitment weekend for minorities. It is by invitation only. I’m not sure what it takes to get on their radar for the weekend, but hopefully you checked the Hispanic box when you took the PSAT. If not, maybe there is some way to get the school’s attention in advance. If you get invited, make sure you go! The weekend includes the chance to interview.

Overall, you have a decent chance! Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much! I am taking the ACT again this Saturday in hopes for a better score. I live in Chicago, Illinois, as well, and I hope that betters my chances. I’ll definitely look into the SOAR program and how to get noticed, thanks!

Did you end up increasing your score? That would certainly help you in the eyes of the adcoms.

Is a 31 a long shot for Rice early decision? Do you think that with the help of my other statistics, I have a decent chance?

Do you know what you want to major in?

I want to major as a civil engineer because I am strong in math. I have completed Calculus AB and BC and got the credits on the AP test, so this year (my senior year) I am taking Calculus 3 and Linear Algebra at my community college.

What scores did you get on your APs? Did your ACT score improve? Have you taken any SAT subject tests?

I got 4’s on my AP Language and Composition, US History, and Calc BC test this year. My ACT score is still at a 31, I am going to take it one last time. And I haven’t taken the SAT subject tests, Illinois doesn’t use the SAT much, so I am focused mainly on the ACT. But I know Rice is big on diversity, and being Mexican, I feel like I have a lot of experiences I can share.
Also, my grades Junior year have been all A’s in the most rigorous classes my school offers. My transcript shows an improvement from freshmen year to junior year.

I think you have a good chance. Have you considered applying ED? Is Rice your first choice?

Thank you! Yes, I am probably going to apply ED. Do you think that raises the chances significantly?

Not significantly, it can be a slight bump depending on the school.

2013

Early Decision Regular Decision overall admission rate

24.80% 15.50% 16.56%

Looks significant to me.

Most of the Legacies, children of faculty, and recruited Athletes apply ED which bumps up the acceptance rate for ED.

ED would give you a bump. I still think you have a good shot. There is/was a why engineering question on the Rice application. I would spend time on that. What courses interest you along those lines. We really need more female engineers, so the fact that you want to major in engineering is a plus. Rice has not historically been a big legacy school. ED is still a good idea if it really is your first choice. Rice likes students that really love Rice. It would be good to go to any recruiting events in your area and visit if possible.

Thank you very much for your tips houstonmom2, I visited Rice about a year ago and loved it. Hopefully I can schedule an interview to show interest. Thanks for helping me out!

I think you’re right Rice is big on diversity. And I agree with houstonmom2 regardless of the legacies etc. applying ED, because it is e-D you have a much larger chance, especially with a non-overhyped school like Rice.

I am thinking that living in Chicago may help a little too because there probably aren’t many applicants from this area. Thank you dangnabbit for the info, after reading all of your comments i will most definitely apply ED

It should help. I have heard that it is much harder to get into Rice if you live in Houston. You will enjoy much milder winters too.

The weather seems nice, a big difference from the Windy City!
