I will be a senior this fall so based off of my high school career so far, what do you think my chances are at (and be HONEST):

Boston University
Bowdoin College
Columbia University (HEOP)
Fordham University (HEOP)
Penn State - University Park (Yeah....not sure If I may get UP..)
Wheaton College (MA)

I intend to have a list of 15 schools, but these are the first 5 I researched.

Boston University - maybe
Columbia University (HEOP) - reach
Fordham University (HEOP) - maybe/reach
Penn State - University Park - maybe

I only know a few, your standardized testing scores are bringing you down :frowning: don’t worry though, that’s where my scores were, and I took a princeton review class and brought them all up to about 600, which isn’t fantastic, but okay for me! i see that your taking a kaplan course, which is great, so use the material over the summer to prepare to retake! schools will see that you made an effort to improve on SATs and most schools are starting to not use them so much, your rigor of classes is amazing! get your sats up and your all set! good luckkk!

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/742435-chance-me-i-would-love-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks a lot - I’ll chance you right now. Please comment other people thanks.

Bump - Please guys, as you can see, I will chance you back. =]

Boston University - IN/LOW REACH
Bowdoin College- IDK, sorry
Columbia University- REACH
Fordham University - IN/ LOW REACH
Penn State, University Park- LOW REACH

You are so far on the right track. the only thing that is really holding you back from making all these schools an IN for you is the fact that your Standardized Test scores are not up to par. improve on that and i don’t really see any other problems.

Chance me back? –>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/743655-how-am-i-doing.html</a></p>

Boston University - Match/Low Reach
Bowdoin College - Reach
Columbia University (HEOP) - Big Reach

Just work on the SAT scores. They should ideally be in at least the 600s.

Guys, seriously thank you. But damn Columbia University is still competitive even if I apply HEOP? Damn, I might just take CU off then lol.

You’re an underrepresented minority so if you get your SATs up around mid 600s it would probably be worth a shot at Columbia. It’s a pretty tough school for anyone to get into. But I have no idea what HEOP is, so maybe that makes a difference.

Thanks man – Im not bad with the SAT, I honestly don’t know what happened. I thought I did well but as you can see, I’m better in math than the other sections. A lot of people are saying the Princeton Review is a better book to prep from, so Ima ditch Kaplan and go Princeton lol.

URM is good for you here, but unfortunately it can’t be a fall-back as it doesnt add that much weight. Your GPA is decent, you have wonderful ECs, and some good volunteer hours. the test scores as of right now will hurt you more than ever. What are your plans to get them up, and by how much realistically, unlesss there was a certain circumstance on testing day. Write great essays, get into contact with admissions counselors at your schools of interest, and do well, very well your first semester next year.
so I had to look up some of these schools to do this but here goes. Ill chance the first time with your current ACT/SAT and then again, assuming a 200 point raise and a 6 point raise accordingly, which is possible given studying from where you’re starting at.

Boston University- no
Bowdoin College- no
Columbia University (HEOP)- no
Fordham University (HEOP)maybe
Penn State - University Park (Yeah…not sure If I may get UP…) its possible
Wheaton College (MA)no

now assuming an SAT= 1210/1680 and an ACT of 26.
Boston University- match
Bowdoin College- reach
Columbia University (HEOP)- no, rejection
Fordham University (HEOP)- low reach
Penn State - University Park (Yeah…not sure If I may get UP…) as long as not UPENN or university park, then match
Wheaton College (MA)- no, sorry. I think if you can develop a list of safety schools then you should be fine, I mean your GPA seems to be fine for the ranges of most but thos test scores will only ever hurt you, perhaps you could look into test optional colleges, and then you’re golden shiny.
chance back.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/743096-chance-lifetime.html</a></p>

Ahhhhh. Thanks man for the honesty. My SAT’s are whats going to kill me. I’m going to study my butt off and retake in October. As for Coulumbia and Fordham they both have HEOP admit, which I will explain for those who don’t know.

HEOP is for students who meet the economic guidelines and live in NY. Students who meet the economic guidelines apply HEOP that displays need for “academic help.” From what my College colleague told me you must have either : (1) High GPA and CR/M combined below 1200 (I have 1010) or (2) Low GPA (below 85) and High SAT scores (above 1200 CR/M). Any student who has a High GPA and High SAT scores is disqulaified as an HEOP admit and must apply Regular admit.

Maybe now you guys can now understand why I’m applying to Columbia. I would NOT DARE apply to Columbia as a regular admit with those scores lol.

One more chance guys, please?

I’ll chance back.

Here I am, as promised.

Here’s a piece-by-piece breakdown (Because that’s just how I roll). This analysis is based upon what I’ve read about the college admissions process and talking to public and private counselors.

Background Information: Always a plus in the admissions process to be a part of the URM and a low income to boot to underscore your accomplishments over financial hardships in life. Your internship at the Deutsche bank could be of some use in the essay process, if you decide to compare that to your family’s financial life; it could be an interesting essay topic. Just as a suggestion.

Standardized Testing: OUCH. URM or not, you and I both know that those scores must be kicked up the rear. Don’t go outside this summer. Lock yourself up in your room with study books and take a practice test every day. I’m being 50% serious right now. Aim for 1800+, or even 2000+.

Courseload: Solid. Chemistry, in my honest opinion, is a pain in the butt. Physics is more geared to pure math, more than any other general science classes, such as Chemistry and Biology. If you are not so stellar in math, take Chemistry.

E.C.: The things that automatically stands out here is your 120 hours of unpaid internship, Member of the Academy of Finance, and Internship at the Deutsche Bank. As I’ve said before, if you could weave these finance-related activities to your family’s financial situation, it would be an interesting read, definitely.

However, one thing I do notice is a lack of leadership positions. Might I suggest that you start a club this year at your high school that is strongly finance-related? I believe that finances are your hook, in addition to your background status.

Therefore, if you do succeed in boosting your SAT scores, this is what I think will your admissions chances are:

Boston University-Match
Bowdoin College-?
Columbia University (HEOP)-Mid Reach
Fordham University (HEOP)-?
Penn State - University Park (Yeah…not sure If I may get UP…)-Low Reach
Wheaton College (MA)-?

BU-Match
Bowdoin-High match/Low reach
Columbia-Reach
Fordham-Match
Penn State-Match
Wheaton College-Safety

Chance back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/745975-chance-me-brown-please.html</a></p>

Boston University-Match
Bowdoin College-Low reach
Columbia University (HEOP-reach
Fordham University (HEOP-match
Penn State - match
Wheaton College (MA-in

Get those SAT scores up and i think you can do Bowdoin :)

SAT or ACT need to be improved!!!

Prepare well for these tests. I recommend you take both SAT and ACT. Then send the best.

sam: thanks for the thorough breakdown of my resume. I truly appreciate it. And I 100% agree with you about my scores. Im studying my tail off for the SAT 1. I spend 2 hours a day studying (would spend more but im working at DB =P). My goal is to hit 1800 because that would look really good if I jump 1480 to 1800+.

Again thank you; your input was very helpful and useful!

Hey HSEF. You know who I am. Just Pm’ed you.

Alright man, you seem like a cool guy so I’ll chance you.

This is interesting. Your resume seems pretty competitive for every single school you listed, so you’re “ready”. You take the right amount of AP classes, you have a good GPA, you’re a minority, you’re low-income, you have volunteer work, internships, and involvement. Also, you follow that theme of “wall-street” in your activities, so it’s good that your extra-curricular activities aren’t scattered too much. Provided you get good write teacher recommendations, make a nice clean overall application, write very good essays that (and then re-write and re-write them again like ten times just to be sure they’re amazing hahaha), you look like a competitive applicant to Columbia, with very good chances.

Now, there is no way you will be accepted into Bowdoin or Columbia RD with those SAT scores… you shouldn’t count on it. Even though everything else is what you need… those SAT scores will not do.

So Bowdoin… no. Not unless you raise your scores to 640 all around. The problem with doing that (I can’t believe I’m saying there is a problem to raising your SAT scores…) is that then you wouldn’t qualify for Columbia HEOP and your chances there would significantly decrease. Then you would have to apply Columbia RD, and you would need 680 on every section to have similar chances.

FYI: Don’t put “SAT Kaplan Prep Courses (11)” on your application.

Chance me if you want… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/750483-chances-top-schools.html</a></p>

^Thanks SO MUCH. Your input was really helpful. And yeah I agree with you so much on that. It’s like If I break 1800 for the SAT (in October) I disqualify myself from HEOP, but If I keep my score as is Im limiting my options to other schools. Ahh, it’s just so stresful! LOL. But seriously, thanks so much. Im going to chance you right now and write you out a thoughtful evaluation.

yep and thanks for the chance back
