*looking to major in entrepreneurial studies and design

*applying:
Barnard College (my dream school, i’d do anything to go here)
Brown University (5 year duel degree program brown/risd)
Rhode Island School of Design (5 year duel degree program brown/risd)
Georgetown University
New York University
Sarah Lawrence College
Wellesley College
Boston College
Swarthmore College
Vassar College
UCLA/Berkeley
Fordham University
Northeastern University
University at Buffalo Honors College

oh and another thing… i applied to columbia ED and got flat out rejected… I was heartbroken at first but then realized I’d be just as happy at barnard. It’s the school of my dreams… and I’d do anything to go there… I’m so nervous about it now though… because of the rejection. I just don’t know what to think.

I'm not surprised you got rejected from Columbia. Your scores are just too low. Lucky for you, Barnard has a reputation for looking more at the big picture. I'd say your scores and GPA are still low for Barnard since there will most definitely be others applying from IB/AP schools with much high SATs and GPAs, but if you represented yourself well in your essays, you have as good a chance as any to get in.

There are so many opinions.. mostly positive. and a couple negative. which is getting me more worried. Anyone have a take on this?..

Someone said this (on columbia/barnard board):

"Of course there's hope.
If you're everything that you say you are, frankly, you are overqualified, and should not be worried at all :P

You have many "safety" schools.
You should consider more "reach" schools."

and then two said this (on the brown board):

"normally I'd have reservations about your test scores for a place like Brown, but those ECs are incredible! I have a feeling that Brown will just completely love all your creativity/well roundedness/globalness...

and since this is our board, screw Barnard (which has absolutely no way of rejecting you...) and come to Providence!"

and this:

"Because of the major you chose, your test scores and GPAs will totally be outshined by your impressive ECs. So I'm thinking in at all! Psssh... I wish I were as creative as you! :P"

Honestly, your ECs sound great but ultimately, scores and grades will probably be more important especially if you come from an exceedingly competitive high school.

I know that you know that nobody here can assess your chances of acceptance at Barnard. You have done all you can do by applying to a school which is known to look beyond hard scores (and you have already been...probably unnecessarily....reminded that your scores are below Barnard's published "averages"). You do have absolutely amazing EC's, so it will be a matter of the adcoms looking at these and whether you were successful in conveying what you are truly all about and why you are a "fit" for Barnard.

I truly wish you the best. You obviously have much to offer wherever you attend!

You have amazing ECS and your GPA is competitive for barnard considering the rank of your high school. Your test scores are a little low, but since the rest of your applicatoin seems strong I'm sure you have a good shot at Barnard and many of the other schools on the list that are easier to get into and/or have a holistic approach like Barnard :) Of course, these chance threads are never terribly accurate and cannot be. Rest assured you are a strong applicant wherever, but you will not get into all of the schools you applied to and only time will tell the rest.

I had vowed not to post on this thing, but your thread compelled me. I got into Barnard ED this year with scores and a GPA similar to yours (570 math, 690 cr, 730 writing) and a 3.3 unweighted gpa at a competitive high school. But I had a great essay, art portfolio, and awards resume. and your resume trumps mine. don't worry about getting into barnard.

and my gpa was only 3.75 weighted. numbers mean nothing when you're worth more than them.

eskimo208, I agree that you seem a good candidate for Barnard. None of us has actually read your application, however. It will depend on how you portrayed yourself to them. I just don't want you to assume that anyone here can guarantee anything.

I do think your chances are good, however.

anyone else out there?

Barnard is just so unpredictable, but they definitely know what they're doing.

They look for the right fit. Do your interests make a good addition to the student body, do they offer resources for your specific interests that will help you further pursue them (the interests). For example, a person who is interested in writing/has a talent for it might be a good fit because Barnard has an excellent English department and many amazing writers from the school. Example B is a person who is passionate about dance. They have a fabulous program for that. Barnard will have various ways of picking up on people who have a perfect 'fit' for the school, from what I've seen (and not just in Barnard's case, all schools).

A 4.0, 2400 SAT student with no activities who does not show much interest in the school is not likely to be admitted over a person with a lower gpa/sat but with loads personality/interest.

In the end though, it comes down to the student who shows that he/she can handle the college work, is genuinely interested in the school, and has personality.

That said, I really do hope you get in! :)

When I visited, I was told that Barnard highly regards the SAT. I think that's definitely something that will not work in your favour. But, no one ever knows with this process, so you applied and you'll see what happens.

orange41- thanks so much :) you seem like you offer some really great constructive advice. would you mind if i pmed you my barnard essays? i really hope that i conveyed myself correctly.. im pretty sure that i did but im not positive.

anyone else out there?

no problem
u can def pm me your essays, and I can give you my honest opinion.

your app seems so borderline, therefore its all the more reason as to why your essay/teacher recs in your app are SO important.

btw, have you visisted/stayed in touch with the admissions office?

Alright, I pmed you my essays- thanks so much for taking that time out to read over them/give me your honest opinion.

Yess I visited. and LOVED it of course :] A couple very good friends of mine go there so I stayed overnight and went to a couple of their classes in the morning and they showed me around etc etc. The only problem is that I didn't take an "official tour/info session" so my name isn't signed up or anything.. I wish I did visit "officially" but it happens.

How can I stay in touch with the admissions office?

Thanks Orange for getting back to me on that pm!! really enjoyed the feeback.

I'm actually posting because I just recently wrote a letter to convey my passion for attending Barnard. I've sent it to the admissions office, who said that they will put it in my file. I also visited Barnard again, and after the info session, I spoke with the admissions rep who said that I look familiar. maybe she saw my website? I really don't know, but she said she's definitely seen me somewhere before. anyone know what this could be? I asked her what I should so because I know that interest plays a large role as well and I wasn't able to interview. so she said to write a letter.. which I did and I just emailed it and sent it out. and she said she put it in my file. I seriously think im doing everything i possibly can. Would someone like me to pm them the letter I wrote and let me know how much they think it will really matter during review of my app? thanks!
