[ *] Essays: Common app essay was about not making the basketball team my freshman year, and specifically how it was a blessing in disguise (Allowed me to focus on school and try new activities). I spent a lot of time of the Michigan essays and had peers review them. I name dropped a professor I conducted research on and a few classes I was interested in. Highlighted my interest in engineering based on my father’s career as a carpenter and going on side-jobs with him. (Also good at math and science)
[ *] Teacher Recs:
My first rec was from my Honors pre-calc teacher my Junior year who is also my BC Calc teacher this year. She also runs national honors society for my school. Obviously she knows me well, and I participate a lot in her class. Second rec was from my We the People coach. He has seen me grow as a speaker and is a very eloquent writer. I also received another rec from the lawyer I work for, he has known me my whole life and coached me in basketball.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Generic; I am friendly with her when we talk, but we don’t have a very strong relationship.

[ *] Other Factors/questions: I participated in the HAIL interview for engineers. I expressed to my interviewer Michigan was my top choice school, and would likely attend if I was admitted.

Already admitted to Purdue and Illinois Engineering

I like your chances, but the CoE is a reach for all OOS applicants. If you are deferred, make sure you send the admissions officer responsible for your area an email reiterating your interest and updating her on your most recent achievements, academic and ECs.
