Hi guys, I'm an international student who traveled around the world, and am now attending an international school in Kazakhstan. I've always attended small, international schools so there wasn't a big variety of EC's and AP classes I could take, but I have an advantage of knowing 2 foreign languages other than english fluently and being more cosmopolitan because of my lifestyle.

I really want to get accepted to Emory because of their awesome Nursing program! But I'm kind of worried that they might not see my January SAT Subject scores in time. I'm planning to send them in right after I register for the test (without seeing my scores) because this is the fastest way, and i'm pretty confident about my abilities. Did most of you guys who applied to Emory take the SAT subjects? I'm so nervous I might not get in..because this is my dream school.

I’m just slightly worried about your GPA because you only took like 1/2 of the AP classes at your school. However, it’s at least nice that your SAT is nicely above the 25% (near the median for admitted students). Which SAT subjects do you plan to take. They could help to show that you have some talent in an area (is it biology?)?

Yea, my GPA kind of worried me too…
I’m taking Biology and US History. I see that you’re attending Emory…Can I ask you your stats? Did you take SAT Subjects?
Also, how are my chances of getting in…? Low, average, high?

Well hi there Pumpkin96,

I am a current student at Emory, and I do agree the Nursing program is quite excellent! I personally did not use any subject tests (often schools view subject tests and AP’s as similar things in the sense they both show specific area’s of knowledge.) So it is good that you took the subject test beacuse as you said, you are light on AP’s. A 700 is decent, but could be viewed horribly. For example my year the NATIONAL AVERAGE on the Math 1/2 exam submitted to certain schools was 780, so confirm that average before you submit. I believe Vanderbilt lays that out fairly well on their website.

I think the key to your application is going to be the essay showcasing how your travels impacted you (I assume). The insight you show here will help justify your lower then average GPA w/o AP classes. In the end though admission are a crap shoot, so take it as it comes.

I would say depending on your essay (assuming it is well thought out and executed showing growth and self exploration) your chances are average. I view admissions as a point system, where if you get above what I call the “Trash Bar” then it all depends on what the reader sees in your application. I call it the Trash Bar because if you have to low of a SAT or GPA, with few exceptions, no matter what story you have there is no redemption. I think you make it over this bar and most of the chances fall on your essay.

Also are you Applying ED or RD? ED tends to be a little kinder to students with GPA’s/ SAT’s on the low end.
