Hello, I’m a class of 2018 admit, so I have a relatively decent grasp on the profiles of my peers that were rejected and accepted.

I think your chances are very strong. You would definitely be considered a competitive applicant. From what I have seen so far (a few anecdotal cases), I know two girls, one Asian and one White, that were both rejected. The White girl had a 4.0, 32 ACT, and stellar ECs, and the Asian girl had a 4.0, 34/35 ACT, and decent ECs.

I think that my essay, the CA essay, set me apart from both my school mates and many of the students who were rejected this year. I wrote my essay about a life event that changed me. I wrote the story with death as a 3rd person narrator and explain the effects on me of a close friend’s attempted suicide. I made sure to note the negative impact; I spun wildly out of control and lost that (0.11) chunk of my GPA in that time period. I conceptualized how I saw the world afterwards, mechanical, dark, lonely, and scary. Then, I mapped out how time, self-exploration, and motivation helped me to view the world in a paradigm that was different than the first and second paradigm. The third and final paradigm involved me seeing the beautiful nature of the world and how I get to be an amazing part of that. The essay displayed personal growth, how I handle and resolve difficulty, and opened myself up to the admissions committee. I cannot stress how much I think the essay can help your application. Both of the girls I mentioned previously wrote essays that were organizationally sound, well written, and good sounding, but their essays often used a large amount of breadth with very little depth.

I’m fortunate to be an admit at WashU and will be visiting campus next week! If you have any further questions, I hope you PM me or post a reply. The best of luck to you  I’m looking forward to discovering what WashU has to offer; I think it’s a lot!

I’d say your stats are fairly consistent with the middle of the pack. You probably have just about as good a chance as anybody else.

I don’t think you stand out, so applying ED is a good decision. You may very well get in that way, but no one is guaranteed admission. Relay for Life stands out to me because it’s so huge at Wash U. Being a female indian-american going for PNP/pre-med, you’re a very typical applicant. Write an essay that shows personality and passion (I know, I know, everyone tells you that.) Your home state also has a decent impact (I’m a female student from New Jersey- pretty rough.) I’m skeptical of how much interest really counts compared to a good essay. I showed zero “interest” and I was fine, as well as many others. People overanalyze rejections.

Also feel free to ask questions!

Thanks to everyone who responded! I’m just nervous about the essay, I know we have to be ourselves and all, but my life is pretty boring to be honest.

The idea can be to write about something completely ordinary to talk about something surprising/meaningful. I’ve read amazing essays about stuff like someone having a “usual” at Starbucks.
