Thanks so much for responding! I'm also applying to Duke, TCNJ, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Syracuse, Tufts, and Chicago which I applied Early Action to so I should hear from them in a couple of days... kinda nervous though lol

I think you'll be having to make some decisions come springtime! The only school that is unpredictable, from my point of view, is Princeton. But who knows? The Ivy's have their own twists in the admission process, and from what I hear, Princeton is one of the top in that food chain. But, what do I know?! UVA was at the top of my list!

You're in at TCNJ with a possible scholorship, but Princeton is a slim shot only because you're from NJ. They turn down NJ applicants with 2400 SATs and all APs.. I know of 1 NJ student who did get in. She had perfect SATs, tons of ECs, all APs with 5 on the tests, but the reason she got in was she was all state track

I couldn't help but wonder why you were deferred at Chicago. I would have chanced you as a match. OTOH the 2008 baby boomlet is going to be a banner year for hurt feelings for excellent students. Awful in fact.

I tried to run the scattergrams for Chicago to see if it would give me any info but they block the data. I went to what I thought would be similarly difficult schools, UPenn, Hopkins, Tufts, Swarthmore and G'Twn.

My best guess, and it is only a guess, is that Chicago is one of those SAT loving schools that places more weight on it than it should. Otherwise I would say your adcom had a blinding headache which resulted in blurred vision.

Thanks for being candid about your deferral, it really helps the rest of us take the temperature of this years admissions trends. Try not to take it to heart. You will land a great spot somewhere.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for putting in your feedback... yeah I'm really bummed though that I got deferred at Chicago. I heard though that this year they got 40% more EA applicants than last year so I'm sure that had something to do with it. Still, it's kinda making me wonder where I may or may not be qualified to go and getting in would have been a good indicator as to how I'm going to fair with the other schools I'm applying too.

BTW, a friend was telling me that some schools reject students who may be overqualified and don't express a lot of interest in their school because they don't want their matriculation rates to be too low... is there any truth to that?

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get in somewhere it's just a little nervewracking right now lol

Yes, I think there is some truth to schools rejecting overqualified students. You've got great stats, and if you did well on your essays and such, I am cautiously optimistic that you'll do very well with your choices. Sorry to hear about Chicago, and I agree with vistany>>thanks for sharing that not-so-pleasant news. However, when you submit your midterm grades to Chicago, be sure to write them a polite letter about how it is one of your top choices. Turn on the charm!

Yeah I think my essays were good... well, I liked them and my English teacher liked them lol so I hope the admissions committees like them too. I'll definitely try that though: sending in a little letter. It just sucks having to wait another four months now for Chicago but I still think that UVA is my #1 choice. Great academics, great atmosphere... you don't think I'll feel out of place at all being OOS do you?
