I currently go to a CC in WA. I have a 3.9 gpa or a 3.83 on a +/- scale. I had one B that can easily be explained on my application (it was the result of a very difficult personal hardship). I have limited ECs but I have held a job. I will be transferring with 90 credits and an AA. I believe my essay will be very strong.

I did fairly well in high school. I graduated from a top prep school and in the top 10% of the graduates in the whole state. I was accepted to the UCs and various CA private schools but I couldn't attend due to finacial reasons. I took some time off from school and when I decided to go back, I chose a CC to save time and money.

I am now looking to transfer for Fall '10 to either Pitzer College or USC. I will also be applying to Whittier and Cal State- Long Beach as safeties.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Anyone? I’d love some feedback and suggestions. What should I try to emphasize in my application? Should I explain why I took a year off and went to a CC?

All bets are off next year because colleges are in a money crunch. That said, you would be a desirable transfer student for many colleges looking to take in transfer students. You look competitive for Pitzer and USC and Whittier. Ironically, CSLB might be a reach because of all the cut backs in the CSUs, especially for non-locals. Check out CSLB’s info for taking non-local transfers as well as if you are applying in an impacted program.

I recommend adding at least one more “would love to go there reach” school plus one or two more safeties (though CSUs should be considered a reach for any OOS student right now). That way you have all the bases covered.

So - in short - your 3.9 is great - now you just need to apply to a good assortment of schools and see how it works out.

Thanks for responding; I really appreciate it. I’m having a really hard time figuring out other schools to apply to. I’m only applying to schools in the LA area and there is just a limit to how many are there. The UCs are out of the question due to the fact that their psych programs aren’t what I’m looking for. Do you have any suggestions?
