Please Chance Me

I'm a caucasian male from Iowa.

GPA: 4.18 W, 3.6 unweighted
ACT 31
Subscores 33 english, 32 reading, 30 math, 30 science
APs: 4s in lang, stat, APUSH, and bio. 5 in psychology
Taking 6 this year including US gov, Lit, macro, physics, calc, and spanish.
AP Scholar with Distinction
SAT IIs: 680 in US history and 650 in lit (forgot i had to take them until like two weeks before in december)

My ECs are average. My essay is pretty good. I would guess my teacher and counselor recs are really good. I go to one of the better public schools in my state as well as a top-notch magnet school.

Your ACT is okay, but certainly not high for WashU. The same for the GPA, which is probably even a little on the low side. Your AP scores won’t impress, because too many people have 5s, and your SATIIs are mediocre for WashU. You describe your ECs as “average.”
It’s clear that your curriculum has been challenging, which is good, but is that enough? That’s a hard call. I think it’s a bit of a reach, but certainly not out of reach.
Good luck.

Thanks a ton.

Somehow that expression of gratitude didn’t seem genuine

WCASParent: Probably didn’t like your answer.

HawkeyeDude: What’s your class rank? I think something like 96% of WUSL freshmen were in the top 10% at their schools.

WCASParent, I am actually grateful that you are honest rather than just saying what I want to hear. I also appreciate the fact that you took time out of your day to help me. I just got my updated GPA yesterday and I have a 4.225W and a 3.78 unweighted, which is much better than what I had predicted. AVHS, I am ranked #1 in my class because my school ranks everyone with over a 4 point number one. I saw the actual secret list on the counselor’s desk and I am about 22 out of 350. Will this GPA drastically improve my chances? Also what would my chances be about percentagewise? Thanks in advance for any help you guys offer.

Both the increase in GPA and the 22 out of 350 (or so) rank are helpful.
Obviously, your test scores still present the same issues.
You are a solid candidate. Do I think you’re qualified for admission? Absolutely. The problem is that there’s no way they will/can admit everyone’s who’s qualified, so they’ll look to other factors, like essays, recs, ECs (about which you’ve said nothing) and maybe demographics. Being from Iowa beats being from NY, but it’s not the Mississippi Delta.

SAT/ACT numbers in the WashU applicant pool do tend to be very strong. However, I think if you showed genuine passion and commitment in your application and wrote a strong essay, that could allay the impression by your numbers.

Also make sure to visit and to convey your strong desire to attend WashU / what makes it truly unique as a school. This is really important too.

Hey floatingriver,
Not to say you’re wrong, but can you tell me why an applicant needs to tell the school why it’s truly unique? I have heard about this piece of advice for some schools, but am a bit confuddled by it, especially for a school like WUSTL that has more than 22000 applications a year. For me, I actually never interviewed or visited WUSTL before I applied (I didn’t visit any other schools I applied to either…didn’t want to deal with traveling costs…and only interviewed at places that required an interview) and I got in. A lot of friends didn’t visit or interview either. A guy from my high school interviewed and visited but didn’t get in (he had really good stats and ECs across the board) So in truth I’m not sure how significant showing interest is.
