Extracurriculars/Summers

Theater tech: since 6th grade. During shows (and there are many), she spends 30+ hours a week on this one activity. She has been Assistant Crew Chief (equivalent to Assistant Stage Manager) and is now Propmaster for a large musical production. She will likely be Crew Chief on the next production.

Summers:

John Hopkins CTY for three summers, mostly science classes
Last summer: Macaulay Honors Program/College Now Program in Bioinfomatics. She took two classes and got 5 college credits. She got an A in one class and an A- in the other.

AP/Current schedule

AP Western Civ: 5
AP US:4
AP Calculus (AB): 4
Other honors classes in literature, Intel Social Science, Independent study in Participation in Gov't (as well as the Intel Social Science), Theater independent study
Current classes: AP Economics, AP Environmental Science, AP English Literature, Technical Writing, Weight Training. She would have taken a course in genetics and a course in black and white photography but the courses were cut due to budget cuts.

She has taken supplementary courses in guitar, piano, organic chemistry and others.

In everywhere except for Harvard and Yale which are low reaches.
Maybe she should apply to schools in between the others and HY such as columbia, brown, Dartmouth, cornell ect.

Your daughter sounds like a strong candidate. I’d say she has a reasonably good chance of getting into Yale EA or Swarthmore ED. (Probably low to mid-reaches, give or take). The SUNYs, Syracuse, Clark, etc. are all safeties or matches, especially as the classes she has taken are so impressive. She should also have a GREAT chance at Hopkins, which isn’t on your list – but since she spent summers there, it should help. And JHU is an awesome place.

She sounds very strong academically, but getting into the top schools seems unlikely. Although she is very devoted to tech, I think the top schools are looking for better extracurricular activities. Most competitive applicants to Harvard and Yale have her grades, test scores, her devotion to an extracurricular, and much more

Also, grandfather was a Yale grad if that helps (it is on the app) and, as for Swarthmore, her interview went really well. She is also a National Merit Scholarship finalist. At this point, with her college’s way of doing things, things are really set in stone. I tried to get her to look at JHU but she did not want to. I also tried to get her to look at Brown but she didn’t want to.

Yale and Harvard aren’t likely because there’s nothing that seems to spectacularly stand out as an applicant. Your daughter will be, in their eyes, another high achieving student out of thousands of similarly talented applicants.

Everywhere else, you’ve got a solid chance.
