Please don't turn this into the 2360 thread rant, but should I retake my SAT?

Hey everybody,

First, I don't mean to offend anybody that participated in the "Should I retake a 2360?" thread but I seriously don't want this thread to last forever over a "stupid" (well at least in my opinion extremely unnecessary) but extremely logical/analytical fight over minute statistical percentages dealing with SAT scores.

On my March SAT, I received:

CR: 740
M: 800
W: 780 (75 MC/ 11 Essay)

For a total of 2320 :D

Do you think I should retake the SAT in May in hopes of getting my CR score up so my superscore is higher? (All three sections on the March test were my highest sections, this is my second time taking the test)

On previous practice tests, I usually get 800 or high 700's on my CR and a midrange 700 on my math due to careless error, however on the real exam, the reverse kind of happened in which my math score ends up being the highest its ever been. Therefore, if I were to take it in May, I think there is a decent chance my CR might become higher...

In addition I live in Texas, so I get a free voucher code to take either the May or June SAT I for free so I won't be losing any money if I go take it again.

I am also a drum major in a highly competitive marching band and I won't be able to take my SAT in October because the 2010 October SAT is the same day as a certain very important marching competition (Bands of America). And I don't want to drag it out until November, so I think May is my last chance and June I will be taking my SAT II's

However the only thing that bugs me is the time commitment with the May SAT. I want to spend time preparing for my AP exams and I am reluctant to spend any more time on the SAT, however if I do retake my SAT and I score higher, will the improvement be worth the valuable time I am taking away from studying for AP exams?

I also noticed that for college admissions, 740 for CR is on the lower end of the admittance rate, I noticed that 760 or higher is usually on the higher end of people admitted to the colleges I want to go (specifically Ivy Leagues).

At the same time, i also don't want colleges to think I am just another Asian who is good at Math but is ok at CR (due to my 740, though I did do well in Writing).

I'm sorry, I'm just rambling well.

Based on the information I have presented to you, do you think its a good idea I take my SATs again in May or by the law of diminishing returns, even if I were to score higher, it won't make much of a SIGNIFICANT difference (please dont start the statistical data thing like the other thread has)?

Thank you so very much for reading all of this and helping me :)

I think you should just take some SAT 2 tests. Your score is good enough.

One of my kids got a 1500/2290 and we all agreed he should not retake (he went up from a 1410/2200 on the first sitting). I think once you get to 1500 CR/M you’re in good shape for anywhere you apply, whether it’s tippy-top schools or places where you hope to get substantial merit aid. If you were my kid, I’d tell you to save your Saturdays for other things besides the SAT. The difference between a 740 CR and 760 CR is ONE stinkin’ question. Not worth it IMHO.

Focus on your GPA if it needs it, do well on the SAT-IIs and APs, and pursue the ECs you love.

Some kids who do well on the SAT-CR (and yes, 740 qualifies as such) take English Lit as an SAT-II. It is a much tougher test, but if you want to demonstrate competence and it works out with the classes you’ve taken/time you have to prep, it might be worth considering.

My IB humanities/social sciences guy took it cold, just based on IB English preparation and one practice test, and wound up with a very decent score. He also wound up with a higher M score than CR, which we all found wildly amusing. These things happen.

Keep in mind that a 740 CR was only three wrong.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend a retake. If it will make you feel more secure in your application to get a 760+ on CR, you should do what feels right. But I don’t think your score is going to affect you negatively anywhere. You should be very, very proud of our 2320. Good luck!

If you have the time, and the confidence that you will do better, retake it, because you have the fee waiver anyway.

"…740 for CR is on the lower end of the admittance rate, …760 or higher is usually on the higher end "

That’s a pretty narrow band. Boggles my …much lower end… mind…

When you first received your score were you ecstatic, satisfied or disappointed? If it was any of the former two, don’t retake. Otherwise, go for it.

Oh thank you everybody for your comments! Btw, I was wondering, is there anyway I can cancel this SAT and transfer them over as SAT II subject credit for June?

Anybody? bump :)

I think you can transfer credit over, but I’m not positive. Believe that I managed to do this for my child under similar circumstances. Mine got a 2300+ on the first sitting and is happy to be finished. College counselors I know all agree there is no need for a retake once you are in the 2300 range.
