How do we intrepret the 25 to 75%tile SAT scores? (besides just simply saying that the middle 50% accepted applicants score...) If I am a unhooked applicant, what kind of score relative to those percentiles do I need (of course SAT scores are only a portion, but I mean just a certain score or above so that it won't hurt me, top 50%, 75%? etc). In addition say one scores above the 75%tile in category but in the 25%-50%, how would that look in comparison to someone who scored within 50%-75% in both? Thanks.

Well they aren't many schools that will tell you that you need a certain minimum score to gain admission.

The ranges that schools provide are just supposed to be ballpark type figures. The idea is, if you are in the middle 50% you are right in line with the average accepted appliacant. If you are below the middle 50 then you probably need to compensate for that somehow on another portion of your app.

If people had the answers to your specific questions the college admissions process wouldn't be so crazy.

As for scoring very differently on the two sections of the test, I think it depends on the school major. If you are applying to MIT the math section is likely a little more important to them

Given that about half the class at any top college is hooked: athletes, URMs, leacies, development...a white or Asian applicant wants to be at or above the 75% to have a good shot.
