Please evaluate my son's chances

I posted a very similar thread to this in December, but we are now in possession of his SAT scores from January. I don't know if that will make a difference, but would like to get input. He will be taking them again in March, for what it is worth. Here are his stats and background info.

My husband and I are both Michigan MBAs and needless to say had a wonderful experience at the school. We would love for our son to go there if he can make it in. Can anyone look at his stats and tell me what they think? (Also, with a state school, does anything besides the numbers really count?) He is a junior this year.

--GPA: 3.4 (weighted) (Accelerated courses, i.e. Honors Bio in 9th grade, Honors Chem in 10th...Honors Algebra II in 9th grade but regular Pre-Calc in 10th. Honors English in 9th grade. However, no honors courses taken at all in Junior year.) Very competitive school. No rankings. Very bright but definitely underachieved for awhile...pulling things up now but has moved off of the honors track...may get back on it for senior year.

--SATs: January, 2008 - 760 math, 590 CR, 630 Writing (9 on essay) He would like to get the CR score up.

--Varsity football team, four years
JV indoor track (discus), Junior year (just decided to try it)

--Treasurer of his grade (elected), Freshman, Sophmore, Junior years...will probably get it next year too. Coach of the Junior/Senior girls football game, won citizenship award last year...generally viewed as a leader in the school.

--Works a part-time job at a local grocery store...worked full time during the summer and now does about 5-10 hours per week but less during football season (Sundays only, as that is the only day he has free during football.)

--Concert Band (Drums)

--Served about 50 hours of community service during high school so far.

--Citizenship award

--Very outgoing, charming, funny...any college that does interviews would only help him. Good public speaker. (No debate team at our school.) (Can one request an interview at Michigan?)

We are out of state (Connecticut). Two alum parents (for what it's worth) and several other alumni in the family.

Thanks for any help!

I think your son's ECs are very strong. Michigan does not do interviews. When calculating GPA, Michigan does not consider grades from freshman year. I believe "core" academic subjects from sophomore year onward are used to calculate the Michigan GPA. Weighting does not factor in. I would encourage your son to work very hard this year to bring his GPA up. Any chance he'll be an athletic recruit?

Hi and thank you for the input. No, he's not good enough to be an athletic recruit. (I have mixed feelings about that anyway as I know how much time/energy high school football has taken, often at the expense of other things like schoolwork and even health...I can't even imagine in at the college level!)

i assume you are in state. that helps. he should retake sat and/or act and do better. if he can pull up soph. + junior gpa to 3.5, he will be ok.

They've said that they're from Conn.

he might want to consider taking some AP courses if his school has them. Try retaking the ACT and SAT, it can only help.
I'll tell u that my stats got me deferred (eventually got in)
ACT 32 SAT 1340
GPA UW 3.37
TONS of extracurriculars
Had one of the toughest courseloads my school had to offer
BTW, it's not too late for him to bring up his GPA, upward trends are favored

actually my GPA was more like 3.5, sorry.
