Please Evaluate My Stats For Schools

I did this about six months ago and I am doing it again now to see where you think that I have a viable chance to get accepted at and where I should go from here, being that I apply to the CSU's in October, the UC's in November and various privates between September and next April. I noted my grades and the amount of units next to each class and in parentheses noted any notable personal situations that affected my coursework and classes.

I think that with my uneven pattern of progress, I know that I won't be able to get into any of the top schools. My goal is to take as many classes as possible this upcoming year so that I can get my A.A and transfer.
I would consider a few CSU's, but as I want to go to Law School (I changed my major from Jewish Studies to Political Science because there is no college in the area that offers the lower division courses needed for that major.) I'm afraid that the Law school admissions will look down on me if I go to Fullerton or CSSB or another CSU nearby. I will consider private colleges, but in order to go to one, I'd have to take out a very large loan.

With my current grades, and if I do well (A's and B's ) in the rest of my planned schedule for next year, where do you think that I have a chance to go to, and where would you feel that I was wasting my time?

I've thought of the following UC/ CSU schools that I am considering . I grouped them under Safety and Reach, as I don't know any schools that would be a Match. Please put your own opinions beside each one. Add schools that you feel that I should consider.

I know that this is a long post, but I really need to figure out where I'm going to apply to and I thought that some of you may be able to help me with your ideas.

(BTW: I am not considering UCI because they have a calculus requirement that would take me another year to finish and a Computer Science Requirement that I wouldn't be able to complete by the end of next spring either. I also do not want to consider Universities with a Religious background. I know that it would be much easier for me to go part-time next year/the year after and graduate in June 2007, but I want to push myself this year and finish my time at the CCC as soon as possible.)

Safeties

UCR
CSU Fullerton
CSUSB

Reaches

UCSC
UCLA

My hooks

Former member of the California Conservation Corps

Former Foster Child

150 hours of volunteer work

African-American

Can read and write in Hebrew. ( Finding out that I had Jewish ancestry inspired me to teach myself how to.)

So, if you can evaluate my stats and EC's and unique situation and give me your honest opinion on my chances at various schools, please do so.

Thank you.

Well first off it looks like you will have about 40 units completed at application time? 35? This doesn't provide much of a background to go on. They like to see major prepwork completed by the preceding fall.

Regarding law schools and CSUs--I think you should look into it more. There are some decent programs at CSUs and if you get a good LSAT score you'd be in a good position for some decent law schools. Although I still think you could get into a UC.

Also with the jewish studies--I'm guessing many of those who apply for that major do not do the prereqs if they really aren't available anywhere.

The stats for jewish studies at UCLA: 8 students applied in fall 2004, 3 of them were accepted. The average gpa of those who applied was 2.99 and the average gpa of those accepted was 3.29. Political Science conversely had a 3.61 average gpa of those accepted and 978 applicants.

You may want to apply to jewish studies if you do apply to UCLA. I think your story could accomodate that well (what you say in your personal statement(s).

Definitely take advantage of the personal statement(s) to mention your history. Don't turn it into a sob story, but turn it into a story of achievement through difficulty. It seems like you have been through quite a lot, and I wish you luck for the future. I think you can do really well, especially if you get great grades in fall 05

SB and UCR look good.

ccprison (poster from here) got into SD w/ similar GPA.

Not sure if u have intrest in those schools though.

sorry to hear about ur unpleasent (to say the least) past situations. I always believe that everything will balance out and u will have a great future.

good luck

you had a tough life, but do try to emphasis on your diffcult life other than your race, since just being an african american may not do it.

wow, forget about school. Take some time off, get some counseling. Frankly, had some problems as well in my own life, I took some time off and came back to school with even greater enthusiasm. Good luck to you wherever you go!

I'm sure you can get into CSUN, or UCR, perhaps?

My biggest concern for you would be Financial Aid "satifactory progress because they might put you on probation seeing as though you've withdrawn so many times. It happened to me once, talk to them immediately!

BruinMichelle:
I wasn't getting financial aid last fall and so I don't have the problem with
Satisfactory Progress for Financial Aid. That was at another CCC.
My current CCC doesn't put you into "Financial Aid Probation" you withdrew after 60% of your course length has been completed. I did so, and so everything is fine in that respect.

I would take time off, but my circumstances require that I remain in school and finish by next June and transfer. So, it is in my best interest to continue in school.

I filed an extenuating circumstances petition to get the "W"'s removed for this quarter because of the circumstances.

I'm already in counseling, and will be going on anti-depressants to help with the depression.

I don't believe in medicalizing the problem...that's something the big corporations are about. Too many people get the idea that they can simply take anti-depressants to feel better. Of course, that mental frame of mind leads to many of them feeling better. But the most important problems remain.

Why is psychology such a popular major?

I've added Smith and Mills to my list.
