Please Explain IGETC

I am a senior in high school from Orange County, California. I did a lot of AP classes in HS w/ fawkloads of EC's and totally botched my SAT's. I went an astounding 2-5 for college admissions and have decided to attend Santiago Canyon Community College and transfer w/ the IGETC program as a Political Science major. Not sure what UC I want to transfer to yet, but to just throw some names out, UCB, UCLA, UCSD, just like everyone else I suppose. I understand you have to complete a certain amount of credits for your GE and IGETC, while getting a high GPA with really good extra curricula's to become a successful transfer to a top UC. Can someone please explain the IGETC program and the whole thing with the credits? I've read some info on Assist.org but it didnt relaly help me out much. It would be even more helpful if someone is a Poli Sci major and has already gone thru the process. Thanks.

Also, what is TAPs?

You'll learn all about it, trust me. The student affairs office or counseling center have tons of flyers on IGETC.

In college you're education has two prongs, you're general education requirements and your major requirements.

IGETC is a set of courses agreed to be equivalent between CCC and UC's/CSU's. It's composed of 7 sections of basic education: English, math, art, social science, physical science, life science, and a foreign language.

After you have taken all IGETC courses you can get it certified on your transcript. That way when you transfer you won't need to finish any general education requirements (in most cases) at your chosen institution. Ap courses can be used to fulfill parts of your IGETC.

Assist is mainly for determining which courses you need to take for your lower division major requirements. (Along with being divided by major and GE, post-secondary institutions also class courses into upper-division and lower-division categories) You major requirements will be divided, some will be lower-division others (most) will be upper division.

Input your school, the school you wish to transfer to, your major, and bam, your set. Better than any crap a counselor feeds you (Always though go to one at least once a semester, even though it's a total waste of time).

Community colleges only give credit for lower division courses.

Your goals at a CCC (if transferring as a junior) are, to complete IGETC, finish a majority of your major requirements, and complete 60 semester units (90 quarter).
