thank you in advance!!

Most of the students are admitted to Pre-Engineering major and few get direct admission to their intended major. I have heard that International students are only considered for Pre-major and no direct admits are made for intl. students. Is this true??

How much time do pre-reqs take?? how much time does engineering degree take after pre-reqs are done ??

Hypothetical Situation:

Student "M" get GPA= X
but with GPA= X he is not able to get into any engineering department (cuz X=Poor GPA)
Now, what does "M" do?? was his fee and time wasted ?? Will he be thrown out of UW?? What are "M"zz options??

Get good grades. Pre-reqs take as much time as you want them to, with a minimum of a year in most cases. I wouldn’t recommend taking engineering, calculus, and physics all at once. So balance it out and enjoy your time, take math, a science, and a humanity or something. Do not waste time thinking “what if I do bad?”. Go study and get good grades. Apply to multiple majors. If you get rejected…then try other engineering majors. If you get rejected to everything, you can apply as a transfer to another school that is easier to get into the department. Or, you can major in something else like a social science. STUDY STUDY STUDY!

@dishkyaoon, if you are a freshman, your high school GPA does not count at all for the engineering major. The only thing that matters once you are admitted to the university is your college GPA, and particularly, your results on the prerequisites.

If you don’t get good enough results to get into engineering, you will not be thrown out of UW. Instead, you will have to go with a less competitive or non-competitive major. Physics and Mathematics are non-competitive majors, so you could do one of those, or you could change tack altogether, and do something like Economics.

@NinRash @Candela2 okay got it…Any idea how much time a person takes to graduate after completing pre reqs ??

I am not at all familiar with US edu system. I am an intl. student.

You will graduate in 4 years including completion of the prerequisites. However, if you decide to do a completely different major if you do not get into engineering, you may have to complete a completely different set of prerequisites, so you will take longer to graduate (~5 years). If you major in something similar to engineering (eg Physics) you may have overlapping prerequisites, so you won’t take any longer to graduate than the standard 4 years.

@Candela2 umm. so on average 2years for pre-req and 2 for ME ??

No, prerequisites will usually take less than that. You can check out the UW Mechanical Engineering website, here <a href=“BSME admission and enrollment statistics | Mechanical Engineering”>http://www.me.washington.edu/prospective/ug/admissions/requirements.html

The standard load for one quarter is 15 credits, or 3 5-credit courses. It’s up to you how long you take to complete the prerequisites…if you only take prerequisites, you can get them done sooner (in less than a year), or if you take other subjects in between, to fulfill general requirements, it will take you longer. When you get to UW you can speak with an adviser and come up with a graduation plan that works for you.

@Candela2 thanks for helping me out
