I see lots of CCers throwing random colloquial terms around, specifically the term "hipster."
What exactly is a hipster? What are the parameters of being a hipster? Are hipsters the ones that wear the Dr. Dre over-the-ear headphones with baggy attire?

A quick google search would tell you better than we can here. Better yet, search it on urban dictionary for some probably funny definitions. A hipster is basically a college student/recent grad who’s way more hip than you and expresses this mainly by listening to obscure bands that you probably haven’t heard of. Think thick-rimmed glasses and flannel shirts or just take a trip to Williamsburg to see what we mean.

Not being one, I can only speculate. It seems like authentic hipsters don’t think of themselves as “hipsters.” It’s just not hip. Then there are the hipster wannabes, who think that the term (and the life) is really cool. However, once they discover that they are not now nor will ever be hipsters, they decide that hipsters are all a bunch of pretentious nincompoops. Some people of the older generations seem to think hipsters all wear skinny-striped bell-bottoms and have long hair, and say things like “you’re a real cool cat” and “lay some skin on me” while they smoke marijuana. So, definitely a negative connotation for them.

Use urbandictionary.com. It will help you with all sorts of terms/slang you’re unfamiliar with.

Also, it’s amusing how the overwhelming majority of parents on CC don’t get the meaning of the word “hipster” and think it’s equivalent to “hippie” from the 70s. So you’ll see in lots of “Looking for a hipster school” threads parents commenting about how they saw many free-spirited tie dye-wearing types on their campus visit to such and such school. Lol.

Well, you kind of have to see it for yourself to believe it. Book a flight to San Francisco/Williamsburg NYC/Vancouver i’m sure there are more towns and get out into the street

the thing about hipsters is that they’re all rich and ironic, rich with irony
