What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement.

After changing my major several time, I finally found my interest in my intended major which is biology. My main career goal is to become an obstetrician gynecologist. Even though it really does not matter which major you intend to do in order to go into medical school, biology seems to fascinate me the most.
My interest in the subject developed when I shadowed and volunteered alongside my uncle, who is a doctor of internal medicine and specializes in Infectious disease, gave me the opportunity to shadow him during the summer of 2009 in Washington D.C. Being able to shadow him was a great privilege because I was able to observe non-surgical procedures such as rounds, paperwork, and visit patients. I was also able to shadow an obstetrician gynecologist since that was my main interest, which I was able to observe surgical procedures. Shadowing this doctor got my full interest because the anatomy of the womans reproductive system and the birth procedure is what I am interested in the most. Not only was I getting experience by shadowing him and others, but he also wanted me to be there most of the hours that he was there so that I can see how much work is put into this career. Although many grueling hours are put into it, my interest and the many divert cases that happen in the medical feel is what gives me the motivation to pursue this. Not only did this started my interest but also, having my uncle as a mentor as well gave me more motivation because there are not many Hispanics in the health field, which I hopefully plan to change so that other Hispanics who pursue the same have a mentor to guide them and be a well-rounded professional physician.
.My experience helped me gain so much knowledge and experience that I wanted to bring that into another volunteer opportunity closer to home, which is the St. Marys Clinical Care Extender program. My prior knowledge has helped me perform most procedures more efficiently. I am also part of the UCLA MEDPEP program, which is a program that helps underrepresented students who want to pursue careers in the health field. Also, taking classes such as chemistry and biology as well is what still keeps me intrigued in this subject, especially when it came to doing laboratory work which is one my favorite parts of class. These experiences have given me such great knowledge of what I am planning to pursue and I plan to use every bit of this experience towards my career. With the right motives and further education, I can proceed towards a profession in the medical field and essentially push further towards my goals. Using University of California's vast collection of scientific journals, I will be given the ability to enlighten myself in biological sciences and become well-equipped against countless diseases people, especially women, face every day.

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are?

A personal accomplishment that has been very significant to me is and thought I would never be able to do is making it this far in education. I barely managed to graduate high school, so education was not my biggest concern or priority. I never put effort in my studies because I never thought or looked forward in life to what I wanted to do career wise. When I attended college, I was still unmotivated due to the lack of knowing what my interests were. During my first year, I couldnt manage to finish my classes, which resulted in being on academic probation. Not only was I unmotivated, but also family situations at home was not the best in encouraging to pursue education since I was giving my full attention to my little brother and my father, who is dialed, while my mother went to work. However, when I started to research and learn more about my major, the motivation to follow through for education is what lit the spark for me to continue school. Continuing school would be a great challenge for me because I did not know or was used to college course work since I did not prepare myself during high school. Balancing my family, school, and either a job or volunteering, is what pushed the challenge even further. However, years of getting through so much and still being able to continue school has so far been a great accomplishment for me because I was able to prove to myself that no matter what hardships and obstacles I faced, I was able to overcome all that and managed to persist in school. I was able to become my greatest fears by accomplishing this, which that fear was not being able to keep up with school.
This accomplishment is especially important because I am the first generation in my family to go to college. Not only am I able to prove to myself that I was able to continue in school but also made my parents proud of me as well. My parents always embedded in my head the importance of education, but I never took it into consideration. However, now that I have understood the importance and the value of education, that is what has kept me going in school.
Before accomplishing this, I was person who never completed tasks, from small ones to even jobs. I always thought that I would not be able to complete it because either I thought I was incompetent or did not care. After being able to come this far in school, it has given me great confidence and I have managed to complete tasks, no matter how challenging it may look.
