I have a predicament, and it may make me sound fickle. I'm not however, I just have an intrigue for a vast range of sciences.

I'm interested in electrical, aerospace, biomedical engineering and a pre-med track (and maybe I'm interested in majoring in a pure science.... AHHH!!).

I know that I do not want to commit social suicide and waste a possible experience at Duke (Can't wait for decisions) by spending my days in the library with a sleeping bag, and this is why I need your guys' help.

Enrolling in pre-med would be definite yes on my behalf, and I'm open to double majoring.

Aside from the obvious fact that Duke excels at BME, what are Duke's other excellent engineering majors?

Is it feasible to double major in an engineering concentration and in a pure science like biology while maintaining a pre-med track?

First of all, pre-med isn’t a major at Duke - it’s just a bunch of classes you take WHILE majoring in something else. Since those classes are a lot of biology and chemistry, most pre-meds find it easier to major in bio/chem and be pre-med due to the high amount of overlap.

Regarding BME - as far as I know, completing the major requirements for BME means you’ve pretty much covered all the classes required for pre-med except for the 2 Orgo classes, so if you do major in BME, you’re pretty much set for the pre-med track.

You can definitely double major in BME and bio or chem, but it would be pretty hard on your GPA… Most pre-med BMEs use their free electives for easy A/fun classes. Also, if you are pre-med, you’re pretty much guaranteed a chem minor because the requirements for pre-med encompass the requirements for a chem minor. And if you take Bio25 at Duke (can get out of it w/ AP credit), you’re like 2 classes away from a bio minor as well (Bio25 or AP credit is required for BME, BME100 is required for the BME major and counts as a bio class, BME has one additional bio requirement beyond Bio25, then 2 more classes for a bio minor).

And as far as engineering at Duke - you’ve not got a lot of options. It’s pretty much BME, Electrical&Computer, Mechanical, and Civil&Environmental. There are only 4 engineering majors offered, but BME, ECE, and ME are all in the top 20 nationally.

Eh…Chemistry is hard at Duke? I heard from my chemistry TA (who’s a chem major) that Chemistry is one of the easier majors in the sciences at Duke…

it depends on the person, but chem is generally considered hard. i think the general consensus would be in terms of difficulty, physics > chemistry > biology > neuroscience > earth and ocean sciences >= environmental science > psychology > evolutionary anthropology (formerly baa, biological anatomy and anthropology)
