I'm not a SLE student and I love to party, so this place with only 19 freshmen and 37 transfer students is def not the best place for me.

So, can anyone comfort me a bit? Is there anything good about Paloma??? Anything at all?

location is great. flomo dining is legit. the transfer students I know are pretty tight- Stanford picks only the best out of the thousand or so that apply. flomo lounge system is pretty neat- you should never have trouble finding a piano for instance.

Just because it’s SLE doesn’t mean there won’t be parties. In fact Alondra has been known to be the most party-hardy freshman dorm, so don’t underestimate Paloma. As Senior0991 said, the location is great - you’re a short walk from White Plaza, Lake Lag, etc. and you have pretty quick access to the core academic parts of the campus (the Main Quad, SEQ, etc.). FloMo dining has real ice cream and decent Indian food. Pianos everywhere. I think FloMo rooms tend to be larger - the ones I’ve been in have been very spacious + they have bigger windows + nice views of the surrounding area. I also love how FloMo is laid out: the dorms are connected to the dining hall (your dining areas and lounges run into each other), there’s a nice enclosed courtyard to hang out in, and the catwalks (accessible from the top floor) are awesome.

Are you sure that there are that many transfer students? I always thought the transfer dorm was Kimball, but maybe they changed that?

Since there have been several recent posts from incoming freshmen concerned about their dorm assignments, I’d just like to add that there are cool people in every dorm, and there’s really nothing to worry about no matter where you get assigned. Since your housing assignment is a concrete piece of information you have about a huge upcoming experience loaded with unknowns, I think it’s natural to focus on it at this stage, but you’ll see what I mean soon after you move in. Also, as to partying: in the first couple of weeks of each quarter (especially fall), most people will be going to big parties on the Row, so that’s where the main action will be. By about the third week, things start to settle down because midterms and papers start to creep up (that’s right!), and that’s when more dorm-based partying will be more the norm, though it’s more low-key. And you’ll find people who are into all different social scenes in just about every dorm, so you can be excited no matter what your assignment is.

“By about the third week…”

Err, are you sure you don’t mean third quarter? Only time partying settled down in my freshman quarter was maybe second to last week of fall and winter quarter. Then, definitely quiets down in Spring because during Rush frats can’t host parties.

But everything else above is true.

^No, I meant third week of each quarter, relative to the weeks before then when assignments haven’t really kicked in yet. Of course you can always find parties any time if you look for them, but the biggest (Row) parties tend to cluster toward the early side of the term. Having lived in Stern last year myself, I can attest that you don’t have to look very hard for dorm partying most of the time, but it was more of the spontaneous casual type.
