Thanks guys!

Your ECs are incredibly weak. I don’t know much about SUNY or Colgate, but I doubt you’d get into JHU. Yes, they are amazing at Biology, and they are pretty competitive to get into. You need to have more interests than just weekly volunteering and a higher GPA.

Thanks for the reply! Any advice on how to make myself more competitive?

Anyone else have any input?

You need more ECs that show more passion than, “Ooh I heard this club is being offered, I’m going to go to the meeting.”

SAT could go up 100 points too.

Ok. My biology teacher and I have been discussing the possibilities of getting me involved in research this summer. We’re not exactly sure how to go about it. But would that look like a stronger EC? Also, i’ve been talking with a few of my teachers about trying to get a Model UN club started. I don’t know if it’ll work out though because we have a low level of involvement at my school; getting kids to join would be a task.

Starting a club would be great, because it shows initiative and leadership. Research can’t hurt either. But whatever you decide to do, start it soon. Long term commitments are more impressive than anything you start right before apps are due.

Research would help. If you join a lab and just run samples, it helps, but it isn’t impressive (that’s what it seems most people do on college confidential). If you meet over a summer, come up with an idea, pursue it throughout the next year and get accepted to presentations, that’s pretty impressive.

The Model UN thing is something that I’m really going to pursue because I’ve always been very interested in the workings of the UN and the welfare/culture of people around the world. I’ve also discussed with the teacher interested in hosting the club the oppurtunity to fundraise money for a developing nation through the club, which we both thought would be a cool thing to do. Like i said before, there are low levels of participation in my school, so we’ll see how it goes.

As for research, do you thing I would have better luck trying to get involved through the hospital that I volunteer at or through a local university? My bio teacher and I don’t really know how to get me started.

Anyone else want to chance me?

Any more chances?

Find a government agency maybe? I know a TON of people who did research for NIH, the FDA, etc. just try to find a scientific entity near you and go with that. I’m not sure how you’d be able to help with university research as a junior in high school, but if you can do it go ahead!

Thanks! I’ll check those out

bump…

…Are the people saying your ECS are weak being sarcastic?
Since when is XC Captain, track captain, band, and class president WEAK?

Plus, 200 hours of volunteering? You’re in at all except Colgate (I don’t know anything about that school soooo)

Good profile, challenging classes. ECs are good, but of you want to go into oncology I suggest maybe doing research at a lab over the summer, interning/shadowing a doctor, etc.

Please chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=15268935</a>
Thanks :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I’m very new to the college application process, so I’m not very sure if the EC comments were sarcastic or not. I’ve been talking to a doctor at a local hospital and he is going to let me work on a research project with him this summer which I’m super excited about. Any advice on other schools to look at?

Any more opinions? I need to know if I’m on a good track right now. Any other school suggestions would be great as well.

I’d say you’re a secure lock for both the SUNY’s and Colgate. Your extracurricular are fantastic and your academic record is terrific. I can’t tell you about JHU, just because its all over the place who gets in. You have a very good shot, and I even think you could aim higher than these schools. Wallrus is almost trolling to a point. If you’re interested in an ivy, you need a very unique impressive accomplishment, but for the schools you’re looking at your extracurriculars are way stronger than the majority of the applicants. Remember, your transcript is the strongest, and that is what matters the most.
