I’m writing an essay for the University of Maryland, and I think it’s going well. The problem is is that the prompt asked for a length of 2-3 pages, and I may have trouble reaching 2. So far, I’ve written 1 page of it, and can definetely make it a little over 1.5 pages. I could probably make it longer if I need too, but I don’t think that it will help me express my theme any better. Should I make it a minimum of 2 pages no matter what?

There weren’t many specifications about the format of the essay and I’m assuming they mean 2-3 pages in MS word double-spaced with regular margins. How many words should I go for?

Also, I’d like to know if my theme fits the prompt:

At the University of Maryland, we value a diverse community. How have your life experiences and background shaped you into an individual who will enrich the University of Maryland community?

For those of you who don’t know what a puja is, It’s a Hindu prayer ceremony, I’ll describe it in the essay

I’m going to write about what going to Hindu pujas has taught me about myself. I’ll refer specifically to one time when I talked back to an elder (which is bad in Hindu culture, although I was arguing in support of a charity for a little girl who needed ear surgery) Then I’ll mention how I was worried about what my mom would say,and was thinking of a way to explain myself. I’ll refer to what i learned from debate team, how most of my debates are not formal. then I’ll say that I was not in a good position to argue from given the complaints I had made earlier about how the puja was being run. Then I’ll be like: “I know what you’re thinking” why was I there in the first place if i had so many complaints? Finally, I will say that b/c this is my culture, and I want to preserve it, it has taught me to take the good with the bad, but also to be vocal with one’s opinion, and I would enrich a campus by speaking my mind which either affirms the opinions of others or changes them for the better. I might even write how debate has taught me to cooperate with those of drastically different opinions.

So, what do you think?

by the way, tell me if you would like to read the essay so far, I’ll PM it to you.
