Please Give Me Your Thoughts!

Hello I am currently a Penn State(honors college) student looking to transfer to another school. The reasons I am transferring are because PSU does not offer an economics degree through the undergraduate business school and only through the liberal arts college. I would like the degree to be focused on applied economics(business economics). I would like to transfer to a better ranked school for my major to expand internship opportunities and give myself better opportunities upon graduation.(not saying that I won't have opportunities) I want to go to school in a more urban area as well. Putting it simply all around PSU just isn't my fit. I am very passionate about sustainability as you will be able to tell through my app. Please give me your thoughts on where I stand and I will also chance you back!

Schools I am applying to:
Upenn(not sure if wharton or CAS this is my number 1 choice however I am not expecting by any means to get in)
Villanova(business school)
NYU(stern)
Georgetown
Cornell(Dyson)
Brown
Columbia(have a legacy here)
Swarthmore

Lastly Yale and Harvard but they are just for crapshoots.(everyone can have their dream schools)

bump10char

your stats are great but many of those schools business schools are difficult to get into as a transfer, id say apply to g-town and villonova

if your able to pay full blow u may get into stern

I was just thinking about this today. I don’t think I will have all the prerequisites done for most of the business programs so I will most likely just apply for all liberal econ degrees. I plan to go back for an MBA 1-2 years after my undergrad so it won’t be that big of a deal. I could always minor in something business related as well. What will may chances be if I apply to all the liberal arts econ programs?

In that case, why wouldn’t you just stay at Penn State? Your justification for transferring was all based upon getting an undergrad business school econ major and you can do that where you are.

It’s difficult to get accepted to top MBA programs with 1-2 years of experience. Also, I don’t think switching majors will increase your chance for internships or opportunities post graduation. Transferring to a school that is perceived by potential employers to be stronger will increase your opportunities.

I don’t think that there is any evidence to support this apart from a few Ivy-obsessed IB firms.

My cousin just got into Columbia from Babson after two years at a Energy Company in NYC its not impossible but yes difficult. When did I ever say I am switching majors I decided that I am going to apply for Economics which is what I am studying now. I decided the only business school I am going to apply to is Villanova’s and the rest I am going to apply for the regular econ programs such as Penn CAS etc.

@ Joblue, I agree with this. I think I have worked hard enough for this step. When I decided on PSU it was because I was unsure of where I wanted to attend college. I planned to use it as a stepping stone in sort of a way to figure out where I wanted to go. I know I cannot handle another year here though thats for sure.

I think most competitive employers take several factors into account and the school is high on that list - but certainly behind the interview in importance. I could be wrong but that’s my impression.

@CHD2013 that is my take on it as well. I like PSU but I would much rather be at a smaller school in the city that gives me more opportunities(even though us honors student have more opportunities than anyone there). I feel like I am not being challenged enough either. I wasn’t that good of a student in high school barely graduating with honors however when I left for school something just clicked. I have a heavy 19.5 credit course load(with honors courses) am a president of a club and an active member at several others, and am conducting serious research that will probably get published. Doing this I am still able to maintain above a 3.7 gpa consistantly with no issues. I just want to learn more honestly.
