Please give some advices for a first time community college..

Hi everyone..

I had a 4.0-ish and a 1300 on the old SAT in high school, but was not accepted by UC Berkeley. Due to my financial problems, I've decided to go to a community college and then transfer to Berkeley.

I have to sign up for classes in a day or two,so my question is concerning double majors. I've always wanted to go to Yale for law school, or one of the Ivy Leagues, so should I double major (yes, I do have passions for both of poli sci and psychology), would that increase my chances of getting into a good law school or any school I will be transfering to?

If you're going to a community college, concentrate on the classes that interest you, as long as they met the core and distribution requirements. Also, enroll in the Honors Program if your Community College offers it. The most important thing to do is maximize the resources that the schools has. If you CC GPA is in the 3.75-4.0, you're in good shape.

Don't worry about Yale Law School or the Ivies. Just focus on what is in front of you. In addition, you could study for your LSAT early on to see how well you do. This could give you a leg up in the competition.

Don't forget to do an internship! Very important. Here is a website that might be of interest for you.

Check out their career program! Good Luck!

OR will it decrease the chances of admission into transfer schools? I've had the opportunity to ponder this, as i've desperately wanted to double major in polisci and business, and will be applying to cal in two years-also umich and stanford a reach (penn/harvard are my super-totally out of arm length-reaches that i'm sending simply because im filling out the common app for good measure). anyhow, does anyone have any thoughts?

Don't get too depressed about going to CC.

Follow assist.org and ratemyprofessor.com religiously. It might mean .3 points of GPA and admissions.

good luck, i am a one year 42 unit CC veteran. Come from a similar situation.

A word of advice... If you plan to double major, be sure to do as much as you can now to prepare both majors at ALL of your possible transfer destinations. Coming in as a junior transfer, you won't have as much time to do the extensive lower div or pre-major course work required for some majors. I ended up at a different school than I had planned on and had to drop my second major.

As far as double majors decreasing your chance of acceptance, at many schools you only apply with one major, so I'd imagine it would give you a leg up because you could apply with whatever major you are more competitive in.

you mean like, get admitted for a less competitive major and state intent to do a double major later on after admittance? are they cool with that? specifically-is stanford/harvard cool with that lol

Since Psychology and Political Science are both in the College of Letters and Sciences, it will be easy to declare both majors once you transfer, especially if you have taken the majority of the requirements to declare at your community college.

Check which major is less competitive and apply under that major to increase your chances of acceptance. Both might be capped majors, but double check on that to be sure. Obtain a GPA of 3.7+ and you should be pretty safe for UC Berkeley. A higher GPA is required for the other schools you have shown interest in, I am sure.
