I am a asian ninth grader at an average public high school in New England. I am looking at (in order of favorites) Middlesex, Taft, Choate, Concord Academy, Peddie, Loomis Chaffe, NMH, and maybe Hill for tenth grade.

For grades, in eighth grade I got As the whole year, but for 6th and 7th I got mostly As but some Bs and even a C. I think for my report card I will get As and Bs, maybe a C in english. I am taking all honors classes though.

I am a member of Key Club, Project Reach, and the Newspaper(fun page). I was with City Year Young Heroes so I did 100 hours community service. I volunteered for about 20 hours at a nursing home last summer. I am a very active volunteer of the Red Cross. And, I am part of the Breakthough Collabortive program(maybe spelling mistake in there). And, I have been inducted into NJHS.

I play guitar and am planning on sending in a tape. Any suggestions on pieces?

I will probably do good in interviews.

Last time I took the SSAT, it was in the 50s, but I have a study guide and will probably get 60s or 70s. help for SSAT scores as well?

just so you know, your grades won’t hurt you that much. BUT. If your SSAT isn’t that good, you would have a lower chance. Get at least an 80% on your SSAT, and that will definitely increase your chances.
I’m also asian, applying for choate & cushing. I’m considering if I should also apply for NMH. It looks like a great school which offers many courses. I’m also looking at other possible schools to apply for. I’m in the IB MYP programms which might increase my chances of getting in since the IB programme is very strict and it’s very hard to get excellent grades. My grades are satisfactory though…

Your grades sound good- I wouldn’t worry about 6th and 7th grade. Definitely try and bring the english grade up. I don’t know about the other school, but MX is really big on their english program. And keep in mind that the schools you’re applying to will probably be harder then your current school- your grades sound like you’ll do fine, though.

For the SSATs- getting above a 90% will put you in a good position. All of the schools you’re looking at are hard to get into. Good luck though- and ask me any questions you have about applying to MX. I applied as a sophomore also.

I think you have a good chance, but you should aim for your SSAT score being somewhere around 75%+ but I don’t think getting a 60 will affect you that much.

P.S to chance my go on my page and look at my threads

w/ low ssat you may still be able to find a good BS like Williston, Suffield, Berkshire, Tabor and Westminister. Don`t get me wrong, these schools do not =easy but they may consider you just a bad tester and look more at your great grades and recs.

Some of the schools I listed are considered a bit lower level than NMH. You should visit NMH, it
s a very nice school. I read in past posts that Loomis is not generous w/FA packages, but it too, is a good school. I don
t know much about Peddie other then the admission rate has gotten competitive in the past few yrs.
Of the schools you listed: Hill, NMH and Concord could take a look at you w/ those ssat scores but you need to have really good everything else like grades, recs and interview. You really should add a safety school to your list. You know there is a lot to choose from in your area. :D

Not good. By the time you enter the school, you will have a season of Lacrosse. So on your app you can put that now. Do you do any yoga, jogging or swimming? You need to add something that you have been doing for a few yrs.

I`m not going to completely agree w/that last post. He is not an international student for one. Yes, it is true that the top Asian INTERNATIONAL students will be in a competitive pool due to the quota allowed.
He is looking at a few schools that will keep him in the running w/ a low ssat.
Donor, I suggest you not consider the GLADCHEMMS group unless you have a major hook. There are schools in NE and Mid Atlantic that will consider you. Dont get your hopes down. Where theres a will, there is a way :D

I’m curious, so if lets say we were half asian half Caucasian but lived in Asia and went to an international school in Asia would I be included in the ‘Asian’ applicants? Even if I don’t look Asian?

@craysian, You have to state your nationality. What country is you passport? @donor, you should not do something just because it makes you look better on your app. On the other hand, if you enjoyed taekwondo, it
s to your advantage to continue. AOs like to see students stick w/ something rather than have a list of 1 or 2 yr. activities. AOs also want to see what a student can bring to the community. So if you
re not very sporty, what are you really good at, other than sports, that will contribute to the school.

Iam a drawer and was planning to send artwork in, but did not know how great of material would have any effect on the admissions decision.

Also, I was planning on sending in a tape of my guitar playing, but i have only been in lessons for an estimate of 14 hours or so. And do not know wa song to do. I also play a tiny bit of basic piano.
