Assignment : Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power?

Essay:
Conscience, that inner voice inside of us that tells us to differentiate between right and wrong is definitely a bigger motivator than money, fame, or power. Through my personal experiences and a present day example it can be clearly concluded that conscience in the end plays a larger role than any other.

Take for example the ultimate sacrifice American soldiers provide to safeguard our country from terrorists and preserve our freedom as a nation. Does any individual solider gain fame or power from their heroic actions? Quite to the contrary they struggle to find mental and physical help when they return. Also, a soldiers base salary per year is on average $15,000 to $25,0000. A football player makes more than that amount in 1 game. Clearly American soldiers provide the ultimate sacrifice by protecting others and do not receive wealth, power, or fame from it.

In addition the movie Equilibrium, released in the late 20th century, revolves around the theme of selfishness. The main character, James Clayton, had the opportunity to make millions of dollars by finalizing an illegal business transaction. Not only was it illegal but it would destroy the lives of innocent people who had money invested in the business. In the end he decides on the "good" decision, to pass on the economic opportunity of a lifetime to maintain the economic stability of others. His conscience, that voice telling him that what he was going to do was wrong ultimately led him to think about the lives of others.

Lastly, take for example various political movements led by people such as Martin Luther King Jr. (for black's rights) or Jane Addams (women's rights). Both sacrificed their own lives for a cause or principle they felt should be advocated. In the end MLK Jr. was murdered for his sacrifice, and Jane Addams battled through poverty while setting up "Hull Houses" to assist women in their lives. Once again, conscience influenced these individuals that all people's rights should be respected and they ultimately paid the price for it.

As you can see, conscience is often a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power. This can be supported through the sacrifice of American soldiers, the decision to think about others in Equilibrium, and in political advocates such as Martin Luther King Jr.
