A better understanding of other people contributes to the development of moral virtues. We shall be both kinder and fairer in our treatment of others if we understand them better. Understanding ourselves and understanding others are connected, since as human beings we all have things in common.

We need others help to understand ourselves. Man is a social animal, as the much worn-out cliché goes. An introvert can never understand himself as much as an extrovert understands himself, because the fact is that no matter how much he ponders over himself, he cannot compare himself to others, and hence leads a life of confusion. A gregarious person on the other hand knows people to with and relate to. All an introvert ever can achieve on his road to knowing himself is confusing speculation, which he can never put to test.

A very prominent example of this situation occurs in Mark Twains much acclaimed novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. The protagonist spends a great deal of time writing about how he dreaded the lordship of the Middle Ages for their abusive and obscene language. It was only after he was subjected to the torture of his friends constant droning and uninteresting never-ending speech that he found himself abusing his friend, thus realizing his true self. Only after his perseverance was put to test by other people was he able to understand his actual behavior.

In our daily lives, we are also prone to not fully understanding ourselves. This is why we have psychologists, who help us in identifying what bothers us, or what we lack. Without the help of expert psychologists, we would be left wondering what is wrong with us. This might result in dire consequences, like frustration and loss of self-esteem. However, after psychologists have helped us identify our problems, we can work positively towards overcoming these problems.

Although one might argue that the only authority on understanding a certain person is the person himself, but it stands to reason that man does not live alone in this world. External factors affect him, which is why he needs external help to understand himself.
