hi! i havent practiced essay writing in about a month, so i just typed up an essay and i want to know what you guys think--and i got stuck thinking of examples so i just used a personal experience...

• Prompt:
"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value."
Thomas Paine
Assignment:
Do we value only what we struggle for? Plan your response, and then write an essay to explain your views on this issue. Be sure to support your position with specific points and examples. (You may use personal examples or examples from your reading, observations, or, knowledge of subjects such as history, literature, science.)

When we are easily able to acquire something, we take it for granted. It is only when we work for something that we value such possessions. I have experienced this when I had to work long hours just to buy a laptop for myself.

When I was thirteen, my brother got a new computer, so he gave his old one to me. I didn’t do anything to earn it so I abused it: I wouldn’t shut it down properly, I would bang the computer when it was running slowly, I would blast the speakers, the list goes on. Eventually, my desktop computer became terribly slow, and barely worked. I begged my dad to buy me a laptop to replace the old desktop I currently had. His response was, “No. You abused your computer that I paid for. If you want a new computer, you must earn it yourself; find a job.” I was flabbergasted: I had to work for something for the first time in my life!

Since I was too young to legally have a job, I took up babysitting during the summer. As a babysitter, I worked long hours during the day, and during nights I would work sometimes until 3 in the morning! I had to give up seeing my friends, going out on the town, and relaxing by my pool just so I could make some money to buy a new computer. For four months I worked, and finally in September I saved up one thousand dollars to purchase a brand new laptop.

The day I counted all one thousand dollars, my dad and I went to the store to buy the perfect computer for me. When I got home, I opened up the box and saw the computer staring back at me. I never felt more accomplished in my life: I worked very hard to purchase this laptop, and now it’s mine. I felt as if this was something I worked for, so I had to take care of it or else all the time I spent on this would mean nothing

Two years later, I still treat my computer like gold. If my dad were to buy me a new laptop, I wouldn’t appreciate my computer as much as I appreciate it now. It really proves that people normally oversee the importance of certain things until they have to work for it.

its not my best work, but suggestions are appreciated :)

Good essay! Although there was only one example, I think you developed it pretty well. Your grammar was generally pretty good, your vocab was decent.
I would give your essay a grade within the range 8-10(most likely a 9), only because I think you could have developed your essay a bit more insightfully in some of the portions.

thanks!! bump…four days
