My Essay
Are people difficult to govern because they have too much knowledge? Often times, knowledge is considered the greatest tool of the proletariat, but simultaneously the greatest threat to an oppressive regime. Knowledge allows people to view the defects of their government and strive for a better one—overthrowing or modifying the current one in the process. Until the perfect state of government can be achieved, knowledge will always cause mankind to be difficult to govern.
The dystopian society created by George Orwell’s 1984 attests to this difficulty cause by knowledge. Big Brother—leader of the totalitarian regime, carefully watches the movements of the citizens and carefully controls what knowledge is available to them. The well educated citizen constitutes the greatest threat to them because then he or she could easily demand a better government. For this reason, their access to the knowledge base is limited.
Because knowledge is often required for a citizen to understand any injustice present in the society, access to book has often been limited in history. In China’s Qin dynast, emperor Qin Shihaungdi burned copious amounts of books during his rule and killed countless erudites in an attempt to limit the spread of knowledge. This knowledge, he knew, could be the downfall of his rule. A similar concept is presented in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, where the government censures books in order to remove and attempt to eradicate dangerous ideas and the possibility to incite revolutionaries.
Overall, a well-educated citizen has always been the worst enemy of a government. Knowledge makes people difficult to govern because it allows them to view and understand any injustices present heir society; consequently demanding change. However, though knowledge has often been detrimental to the government, a philosophical mind ultimately benefits the proletariat and common people as governments are forced to evolve to better and better suit the interests of the people and not themselves. Indeed though knowledge in the citizens provides difficulties for the governing, it forces them to evolve towards a better society.
