I stupidly thought that my practice book's essay grading service was free. Of course, it is not. So, would people here please offer their grades for it? Thanks a lot.

Assignment: Are we free to make our own choices in life, or are our decisions always limited by the rules of society?

Although society is always prepared to judge and limit us, we are free to make our own choices in life. We should not let society control how we think; we should make the decisions that we want to make. We also have the ability and responsibility to do our own work; through individual efforts one can control ones future.

As we go through life, we make decisions on a daily basis. Some decisions are minor, others leave a big impact, but they are all decisions that we can make ourselves. For instance, you may face the choice between attending a party or studying for an important test. Your friends, and most of society, want you to join them at the party. However, this test will have a large impact on your grades. While society has a preference as to what you choose, the final decision is ultimately yours to make.

On the same thread of thought, we must also do our own work in life. Society, with its preferences for certain actions, often wants us to slack off and not work hard. However, we must choose to do what is best for us, and devote ourselves towards working to achieve an end result. For example, perhaps you are working on a project with a group in school. If you do as society prefers and go out socializing, you leave the work to others in your group. If you take the initiative and choose to work and help your group, the final project will be better than if you left them to work without you. Taking the initiative will also result in a more honest end result, because your work was also involved.

A modern literary example of how we make our own choices is Scott Westerfelds Uglies trilogy. In these books, society expects teenagers to succumb to plastic surgery at the age of sixteen in order to become pretty. However, teenagers can choose to escape the surgery by running away. This choice does come with many risks, because society chases after the runaway teens. These brave teens ignore the preference and rules of society by making their own choices.

As I have explained, we are not limited by society in the long run. It is often easier to just go along with societys preferences, as in the Uglies trilogy, but we can take the initiative to make our decisions and do our own work. Thus, as long as one is willing to go the extra mile, one can break free of societys preferences and rules.
