Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

A colleague of the great scientist James Watson remarked that Watson was always lounging around, arguing about problems instead of doing experiments. He concluded that There is more than one way of doing good science. It was Watsons form of idleness, the scientist went on to say, that allowed him to solve the greatest of all biological problems: the discovery of the structure of DNA. It is a point worth remembering in a society overly concerned with efficiency.

Assignment:
Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

ESSAY:

People undoubtedly achieve more when they do things their own way. Everyone is different and have their own way of approaching a particular matter. People have their own strengths and weaknesses and nobody other than themselves know better about their strengths and weaknesses. So it is better if they have their own approaches to any task that they do.

Everyone can not follow the same pattern while doing a particular task. Some people may prefer to work in intensive short bursts while others may take their time to do a particular task. This simply depends on how each person's body works. Also some people prefer to work in groups which help them to stay motivated and to help each other out, etc. Other people prefer to do their respective tasks on their own as it may help them to focus better, prevent distractions, etc. Also not everyone can learn something new by the same means. Some people listen and learn better, some read and learn better and some people may need to write things down in order to learn and remember.

Let us take the example of the infamous fictional yet widely acknowledged detective, Sherlock Holmes. He had a very different approach to the ways the police of Scotland Yard dealt in. Sherlock Holmes was unorthodox instead of following a particular procedure that the police followed. He often sat on his arm chair, seemingly languid, but he came up with solutions faster than the police did. This goes to show that following a universal procedure does not necessarily guarantee success.

Bruce Lee, who is one of the most renowned martial artist, practiced martial arts differently. He was initially trained in Wing Chun kung fu. After sparring with an opponent he felt that this style was not as efficient as he wanted it to be. He felt that it was too rigid. So in his strive to achieve more, he incorporated many different martial art styles and came up with his own unique style called Jeet- kune- do also referred to as the style of no style. He did not wanted to be limited by one particular style, so he improved his arsenal of moves using an amalgam of styles. He often said that he wanted to be like water, formless and adaptive with no boundaries to limit him.

So, people may do the same task in different ways. This might lead to better results than if everyone followed the same approach. Everyone's body functions differently. People have differences in ability and so they their work habits may differ. Therefore I believe we can get better results if we do things our own way.
