Assignment:
Is it better for people to be realistic or optimistic? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

I believe that the reliability of either optimism or realism depends on the situation at hand. I propose when one is out-reaching a goal nobody has never achieved before, it is crucial for one to be optimistic and hopeful. When one is determined to repeat something spectacular done by someone else—such as running one mile in given time—a realistic and logical attitude is integral. My statement will be supported Thomas Edison and myself, optimistic and realistic respectively.

Thomas Edison is famous for being a persistent and optimistic inventor. The most well known story would be him trying to find the perfect conductor through six thousand trials of carbonic plant fiber. But he also performed 10,296 times of experiments in order to invent the nickel battery. Notably, the light bulb was not the most optimistic part of Edison’s character. He was determined to invent a whole new electric system for the use of a light bulb, and he succeeded among all the others, because he was hopeful and aimed high. Therefore, when you aim the “unachievable”, aim optimistically!

When I was tested on the 1 mile run in 10th grade, I started off optimistically, in other words, rather blindly. The first few trials of running, I had no preparation except a pumped up heart to finish the run. The results were undesirable. The teacher gave us advice, and I realized I had to do more than just be optimistic. Weeks before the test, I practiced with method and logical planning, such as picking the hours with less pollution and timing the trials. I had improved a lot through not only a hopeful heart but also with a clear mind.

Therefore, I assert that having an optimistic mind is really important for achieving something great, whereas other times when the aim is certain, planning logically would be important.
