Please guide me through applying for college

Hi, I'm a senior and I'm starting to apply for college. I just have a couple of questions though:

1) On the common app, does the essay topic matter? I was thinking of making something persuasive that would give the college a good reason to accept me
2) What could I put in the additional information section?
3) Is it okay if I only have 2-3 activities and just a few honors/achievements to show off?
4) After my common app is completed and submitted, would the college see my SAT scores and teacher recs? Or do I have to submit those in separately
5) Could I apply for college with little help from my parents? My dad is pretty clueless on the whole applying process.
6) What I've done so far on the common app is that I've went through it and filled out as much information as I could, I'm going to start working on the essay, short answer and additional info now. After I'm done with all that what would be the next course of action?

Also what does wavering your right to the teacher recs mean on the school forms section? should i just agree to it?

Read through this entire website and see if it helps answer some questions.
