PLEASE! Help a NYU Stern freshmen!!!

Okay I have a pretty big problem. I was accepted at NYU Stern as an Economics major, but I REALLY want to become an actuarial scientist, and I didn't select that as my major. I really love Economics, and want to study it at NYU. Here are my questions:

1) Can I self-study for the Actuarial scientist exams??? I have a passion for self-studying exams. ( I am a geek, I know. I found this out self-studying for AP's.)

2) Can I be an Actuary internationally after passing the US exams? My main area of interest is the middle east: Dubai, Doha, Kuwait City. ( I speak Arabic)

3) Can I still become an actuarial scientist after having an undergraduate degree in Economics??

4) Do you even go to Graduate school if you want to be an actuarial scientist? I want to pursue a PhD and work for a good company, try to work my way up.

5) Will Turkey make it into the semifinals of the World Cup 2010? ( This is a 250 dollar wager against my father who says "no" lol. This is serious! I need to beat my father!)

3…yes. I think.

5…no. Consider your $250 gone.

HELL no, sp1212, Turkey has an allstar team this year, check fifa! Really!? What is your top four! I am confident about turkey…

Oh don’t get me wrong. Turkey was the team to root for during the Euro 08, I went for them because of all those comebacks! But the World Cup is just a whole different thing and I don’t think Turkey is ready but we’ll see.

I can’t wait though!

haha, they are 7-2 so far I think with both losses to Spain, the last match was epic! Turkey was up by 1 point at the halftime, then boom, Spain comes back with two back to back goals…we will see.

Bump Bump Bump, want to see more people helping me! Thanks!

first off, you dont declare your major at stern til later. stats and economic theory have very similar course loads. alot of times you will need to maybe get a masters in like math or like engineer? to prepare for the last couple of tests for your act license. my friend is thinking about that path. nyu is pretty flexible , you can probably major in math if you really wanted to. if you start on maybe calc 3 and linear algebra frehsman year, i think you should be fine with maybe a ugrad degree to take like all 7? tests

I know someone who is an actuary. She did not study actuarial science ever and has bachelors +. So I would assume she self-studied for the exams… I think her degrees are in math/comp sci, but will check and see if she’ll answer your questions.

Except for number 5 :)

5 is the only thing I am positive about lol, Bump!

Bump(10 Char)

Turkey will be lucky to reach Top 8, no way top 4. Brasil, Spain, Argentina, Holland, Germany, and Portugal (just to name a few) will all murder Turkey in one-game direct elimination.

All hail zinedine zidane

haha okay, back to my main four questions please! Bump! What does it take to become an actuary? Is the pay good?

My friends grandpa is an actuary. The pay is good but they have a reputation for being the most boring people in the world. If you wanna make good money, love numbers and don’t mind your job becoming your entire life then being an actuary just may be for you my friend
