Hello,

Unfortunately I have been rejected from every college I had applied to.

The following link has my profile :-

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1310583

Sadly enough I feel that I still need to study in the US because Indian education system doesn't have the freedom and flexibility that I need.

Lastly my father can only afford around $5000 - $10000 a year.

So now as I would reapply anyway.. Can someone help me shortlist colleges and tell me how should I improve my chances.

I would like to apply early to one college and apply to 5-6 colleges in the regular round. ( Please consider Canadian universities too.. )

Thanks a lot..

The obvious problem is that you are an international applicant who needs significant financial aid. The second problem is that your essays did not help you…your topic was a “childhood obsession with Hitler”…that is just never a smart or reasonable choice.

I want to reapply this year so I can change my essays…

If you do change your essays, strongly recommend next year that you do NOT write an essay on your teen obsession with Osama Bin Laden and how you grew out of it…

^Please don’t be sarcastic… I am too upset after getting rejected from 14 colleges. :(

Btw I hate Osama as much as anybody does so rest assured I won’t be writing such an essay.

I agree that the essay topic was a fatal mistake but now what has happened has happened. I cannot change the past, I can only do something with the present so that the future is better.

So can someone give me a genuine advice. P-L-E-A-S-E

Anirhuda–

The only real advice anyone can give you at this point is to reapply next year to schools which give aid to internationals. this is mostly not the case. Internationals, even at elite schools, are not given aid simply because there is not even enough aid for most US students and these are tax exempt organizations. If they were to begin giving too much aid to internationals, it would be problematic.

Some do give aid to internationals, however none of them, as far as I know, will be open to reapplying this cycle.

Good luck to you.

There is no advice anyone can give you. Part of being an adult is making your choices and living with the consequences of your actions. You wrote an essay that you knew would be abhorrent to any American who read it and now you must live with the fallout from your decision. You have every right to write whatever essay you want. Now you have to live with what you wrote. Nobody here can save you from that.

^I can afford dropping a year… I am planning to apply for fall 2013… I know this admission cycle is over. :(

Is it so that I was rejected only because of 1 essay that also an additional one.

I never thought that the essay would be so harmful, I was just trying to be honest and tell the colleges a bit more about me. :(

Well, it was truly an unfortunate essay if you wanted to come to the US, and it isn’t one that will be forgotten, probably.

You should get some advice if you can, in terms of stats and where you might hope to get aid, and you might also consider schooling in other countries, as well as the US, including your own.

Good luck to you.

@poetgrl - The essay won’t be forgotten, so if I apply after four years for graduate studies… Will I still be rejected ??

Your SAT’s aren’t particularly impressive, either, unfortunately.

Good luck to you.

No. There won’t even be the same people reading them. I just mean, when you reapply next year, they are going to remember the Hitler essay. Maybe they won’t remember your name.

Again, best wishes for your future success.

^ If I improve my SATs… Will that improve my chances ?

Should I post my essay here ? Can someone tell me if the essay was so dangerous and instigating ?

I really have no idea. You just seemed desperate for someone to respond, and so, I did.

In the US, Indians are considered ORMs, or over-represented minorities in our schools. So that compared to their number in the population, they are highly selected at a much higher rate. American’s of Asian descent, including India, have to get higher scores than their peers to be accepted to the same institutions, unless, of course, they have done something really outstanding. (The common joke is cure cancer).

All that said, the schools you applied to accept nobody. Less than 10%, and I have no idea what that percentage is for your region of the globe.

You need to get some advice from someone who knows these things.

Good luck.

^ One last question - Will I face the same problems for graduate school or will it be a bit easier or will it be more difficult ?

If not undergrad, I really want to attend graduate school in the US.

I do not know the answer to that question. I’m sorry.

If you go to the front of the forum and scroll down, there is a grad school section.

Is there anyone in your country who can advise you on this?

Essays are very important in highly selective schools like Colby and Hamilton, so that could be the sole reason you were rejected. Next time around, have your personal statement proofread by many people (not just for grammar, but for the appropriateness of the topic as well) and make sure that you nail all of your supplements- this will most likely mean you’ll have to do a lot of research for the “Why _____ College” essay. Apply to a range of schools, focusing heavily on schools that either give financial aid to internationals, or give good merit aid. MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, and Amherst all meet full need for international students, but all of these are reaches. Do some searching and you should be able to find schools that not only you would likely be able afford, but also that you are interested in. Most importantly, make sure to apply to more than two schools.

I doubt your essay will be remembered, and I’m pretty sure no one keeps files of rejected applicants. You should probably be applying to new places anyway.
